James has been working on a few new tapers:

8' 4/5wt 4- and 5-pc Explorer Series (EXP): Medium-fast 4wt, medium action with a 5wt. Black glass. Lightweight travel rod for small to medium-sized trout streams, much like the Spring Creek series but with added strength in the tip. Excellent pack rod, can be custom cut to a few inches beyond 8'0" or as short as 7'6". Outstanding all around light trout rod.

8'6" 5wt Trophy Trout Series (TTS): Medium-fast 5wt with the power to cut through wind, throw big flies and turn big fish. Will still present small dries on 7X with a 5wt line. Can be cut to ~8'9". Black glass in 3-pc.

6'0"-7'6" Salvelinus Series 1wt (and 2wt "dry fly"): Medium-action 1wt or 2wt "dry fly" action rolled off the Native Trout Series (NTS) mandrel. Typically the NTS blanks are slow action, but the reduction in weight moves the flex profile in these blanks toward the tip, making them snappy but still delicate for those tiny blue line fish so many of us love to chase. Black glass with white spigots in a nod to the white leading edges on the pectoral, pelvic and !!!! fins of char. These blanks are extremely lightweight, with the 6'0" 3pc 1wt weighing just 0.75 oz and the 7'0" 3pc 1wt a scant 0.98 oz. Available as standard 3-pc blanks but James will cut them in 4-pc format for longer examples. Will handle dries to #14 and fish to 12" while still providing an extreme light line experience. I'm building 10 of these with full brook trout theme (thread wraps, tubes and rod socks all part of the brookie theme) and have the blanks in hand.

8'3" 4/5wt semi-parabolic re-release in black glass. A very versatile rod capable of throwing 4wt, 5wt and even WF6 lines. Light 3-pc blanks that make excellent all-around trout rods, especially for the eastern tailwater crowd that might travel out west occasionally. Fine stillwater rods also.

Feel free to contact James for blanks or me for custom builds. Looking forward to getting more of these in the hands of glass nuts who want quality American-designed and American-made glass.

Wonder why black glass? His amber colored blanks were just right IMHO.

Perhaps I am missing something, but how can an 8'6" rod be cut to 8'9"? Do you mean that this particular taper can be made as an 8'6" rod or an 8'9" rod? :)

No reel seat... Just kidding. Master blanks are either longer than 8'6" or extension can be added to the extreme butt section before the completed blank is cut and ferruled.

Hello, today I received my TT 8' 6" 3 piece 5 wt. blank. James quality is the best, the blank is straight, ferrules fit great, overall fit and finish is first class all the way. It took one week to get the blank amazing service. I mostly fish lakes and when on moving water its streamers and nymphs. This blank seems like it will do all that and more. Really looking forward to fishing this blank/ build on lake Crowley this fall. The best trout lake in the Sierras that it is full of rainbows, browns and Lohanton cutts that go well over 20 inches.

I just received 3 of the EXP blanks (4-piece) a few days ago and I have to say that these are some of the best made blanks I have ever seen. Perfect finish and ferrule fit, and very straight.

A general observation though - a preinstalled 8mm stint would be a nice touch on most glass blanks. These have an inside butt diameter of 10mm and fitting a mortised reel seat is not possible without the stint. I have ordered 10 and 8 mm carbon tubes, but a preinstalled stint would be a nice touch.

The last blank I purchased from James, had a fiberglass stint. I assumed it was standard, with his larger blanks, but I never asked if that was the case.

I'm late to the game here but do you have any photos of a finished Salvelinus Series? Your description sounds killer!

Thanks,
Chris

The salvelinus 1wt blanks run $175; the EXP blanks and semi-paras run $200-225 (I am pretty sure anyway); and the TTS are $225 (again I'm pretty sure). I know James is checking his email while he's away, and I'll try to get a hold of him today to confirm the prices I've stated above.
