I'm going to be out that direction in July . Is there a flyshop in SW Mt where I could test drive one of your glass sticks ?

Thanks so far for the interest and inquiries. There's a very good chance I will be upstate NY around Memorial Day and will have Western Glass with me.
There will be a full line of demos available at the Bozeman Reel office eventually, but we are currently busy filling orders. If you are in the Bozeman area i am more than happy to meet anyone out for casting/testing.

Dusty, looking forward to see some your new rods this summer! Will you be at the Bozeman bamboo gathering again this year?

Mike, from the bamboo forum: http://classicflyrodforum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=114&t=84504&sid=a08887c3241e6bbccd6bdf3ae73c8b1a

Long haul for me. Wish I could make it. But, I have mostly glass rods anyway.

Not to get off topic too much here. But there was plenty of glass at the Bozeman gathering last year. Dusty brought some of his rods, and I am looking forward to seeing his new offerings. They sound interesting. I brought an Ijuin that was a big hit along with what Duff described as the most pristine Peak he had ever seen. One of my friends also brought some Winston Glass and Stalkers. Fun was had by all!

Dusty, what's the bend like in your 8 and a half footers?

I would describe the bend as mid flex. Recovery is medium fast. The 6 and 7wts are quicker, the 3 and 4wts are more delicate, and the 5wt is in between those.

Yesterday I had great fortune to sample several of the new "Western Series" of rods from the Bozeman Rod Co. Dusty Smith was more than generous enough to stop by the house and spend some time setting up and allowing me to cast each of the new line of rods. First I have to say that if I had not been told they were fiberglass I would have guest that they were of another material. The tapers on these rods were far and away some of the more crisp casting glass that I have ever had in hand. The ones I cast were all 8'6" rods from 7wt to 3wt. The 7 & 6wt. rods were absolutely rockets. Classic big trout/stealhead rods. Great additions for the float fisher. And, dare I say, wonderful potential to be excellent saltwater rods. The 7wt. in particular. Power houses. I was able to cast them with tight loops that created speed that I am not capable of. Excellent big rod tapers. Then there were the 5 & 4wt rods. The 5wt. is a classic western dry fly rod. The 4wt. more of a spring creek tool. The color options here were very desirable. But the rod that won my heart was the 8'6" 3wt. Yes, that's right, an 8'6" 3wt. One would think that this bugger would be a real noodle. A soft rod as soft as the preverbal willow stick. Not so. This taper was one of the best long rod 3wt. tapers I have cast in a very long time. An excellent spring creek rod. An awesome tool for the likes of rivers such as the Firehole. If I had to compare this taper to any other rod it would remind me of that excellent taper of the original Sage LL 8'9" 3wt. that is so coveted by so many anglers. This "Western Series" 3wt. from the Bozeman Rod Co. is spot on! Excellent! I encourage all of you folks to try this rod when you can. It's a keeper!
I want to once again thank Dusty for the time spent and I wish him and the Bozeman Rod Co. the best of luck with this new endeavor. I am certain that this company will do just fine with this "Western Series". Note too that I have no financial association with this company.

Don't see these blanks on the website which might need a name change I am thinking. The 8'6" 3 wt is intriguing.

Paul,
We will be adding the offerings to the website sometime in the near future, in the meantime anyone who is interested feel free to pm/email me. The 3wt is a very cool rod and my favorite is the 5wt.

Dusty, count me among the salivating throngs. I'll be looking for one of those blanks when they're available.

The longer length glass blanks might prove to be popular, an 8'9" 7wt would be a great blank for fall run Browns. It's hard to tell from the pics...any chance they have spigot ferrules? Are they made in the U.S.A. like the Paradise glass rods?

Did another casting session at Depuy's Spring Creek and the 3wt along with the 6wt were highlights. Thanks for all the interest and emails so far.

I met up with Dusty a few days ago when he was in my area visiting family and fishing. I got to test drive his 8-6 4wt Western Glass. Besides the fact that Dusty puts great workmanship into his builds, the rod was very pleasant to cast, felt like a true 4wt, accurate and a pleasure to cast. It didn't take much to find the sweet spot. While the in close casting was great, this blank will reach out with ease and stay accurate, without feeling like you are over working the rod. I only wish he had a 8-6 5wt with him, since that is my personal favorite configuration.

If your looking for a longer 4wt that is a "Dry Fly" rod, (pmd's, olives, caddis, the small stuff) this blank or rod gets my nod.
