This is the first full length wood handled fiberglass build for me. Although I've made a number of bamboo rods with full length wood handles, this is my first wood/glass build to date. It posed a number of problems that I had to work out that aren't a problem with bamboo. It was the taper of the blank that was the issue, but all turned out well.

Steffen 8' 3/4 line 3 pc. blank.
3/0 maroon YLI silk with 8/0 black silk edgings.
8/0 blued carbaloy stripper.
Snake brand snakes.
Blued cap, ring and winding check.
Camphor burl handle finished with Tru Oil.
The owner likes it, mission accomplished.

Plus, you can use the grip as a troot priest.

Actually, elegant and eminently fishable, I'm sure. The nice, dark hardware leads me to think black or other very dark wraps would work well, too.

Having never fished a wood handled fly rod of any type, I gather the feel of the rod is far more sensitive?

Thanks for the compliments guys. The owner was pleased enough to have another Steffen model built on the same format as a matched pair. Back to the bench! !
Mark.

A Steffen rod is on my 'gotta have' list. That is one beautiful rod. The owner should be very very pleased.
