The Echo rods cast very well with the according line rating. I could not imagine putting a 5wt line on my 4wt... and yes I have cast and fished alot of glass BUT the Echo is the best casting rod for my stroke. I'm buying the whole series and at least another 4wt......and yes all will get custom hardware:)

Some of us have poor imaginations and have to actually try things. I'd recommend stop trying to imagine it and actually try it. You might be surprised. Experience and experimentation is enlightening.

I should state that I did try a 5wt on my 4wt along with 4wt line and 2 different dt lines. 5wt line was too much.but the wf 4 is perfect... from size 6 hoppers to size 18 dries.

Had to work today. So I am not upset. What I was trying to say was just cause a rod doesn't work for you or me. Doesn't mean it won't work for some one else. I see it all the time. And yes, if you look around you can find deals all over on new and used rod and reels two. To say you don't like rod because of what ever, is O.K. But to out right say it is crap, I don't think is right because I am sure there are a lot of fly fisherman that have that rod and is very happy with it. That is all I was trying to get across. There are rods I don't like but I know other of my friends love. That is all.
Each to their own! Go have fun!

In this isolated discussion, I don't think I outright said the Echo rod was crap. Aurelio mentioned that in particular the grip was a piece of carp. I think I did say the actions stink. Give me some credit! I also admitted to liking the color! :)

Sorry, I wasn't trying to put words into anyone's month. It is just for someone else it maybe the perfect rod. That's all. Good fishing to all.

I like the 7'10"/5wt Echo. I like it better than and several other glass rods I've cast over the years...I've cast lots of them, too, including the new Orvis glass and Kabuto 5wts. The Echo rod action is sweeter and buttery! The blank color is nice...it has an earthy tone to it. I don't mind the hard wear or the grip in the least and love the price. It's a great rod for the price. Especially when I consider how much glass has inflated in recent years.

I know there are those who like the Echo's but IMO, you get what you pay for. I always thought they were WAY below par and not even worth the money they're asking. That includes they're performance.

Low price does have some virtues. I was walking out of a brookie stream yesterday and took a spill/slide. No injuries, but as I was thinking that I might come down on the rod, I also thought I maybe should have brought the Echo 3 wt. instead of the Scott F2. FWIW, I think the Echo 3 wt. (and it is that, for me) is not bad; I see what you mean about limited window, but that seems to match pretty well the small stream fishing I encounter around here.

I agree The 3 wt has a very limited window, but when I am casting it in that "limited Window" situation it makes me tingle like when I go over a hill too fast in the Ozarks and that makes me smile.
how ever... I did just sell it as a down payment on my Steffen.

Got my 6'9" 3wt back with a new handle and went down to the stream to break it in and caught two cutbow's in the 14" range on a dry dropper rig and was smooth as can be with a fish on and she did every thing well in close and out to 45'.Thank you John for the great job on the handle........aurelio

You're welcome Aurelio!

Now that things have slowed a little, I can devote some time to fit a new grip and seat on my own 7-4 #4 weight echo.
I did like the way that 6-9 of yours felt in a wiggle test.

John

I did a few short casts with a friend's 6.9ft Echo Glass.
It was strung up with a 3 weight line (obviously) and it felt a bit light. I thought it would come alive with a line class heavier.

What is your thought Aurelio?

I see the haters are still around. Sad.
I think some folks enjoy running down some modern mass produced lines.
Remember, Shakespeare, Cortland, Berkley, Conolon, Fenwick and Phillipson were mass produced.

It's a fine $199 rod. I knew about the cork when I bought it. I wasn't expecting a $299 rod.
Nor a Steffan, Barclay, McFarland, Winston, Scott, etc.
The 3 wt. fishes great for me with a light 3 wt. DT Cortland Sylk.
When I am fishing, catching, and smiling, I kind of forget what the brand name in my hand is.

Good rods do come in just about any price range, and a good rod does let you forget about it and concentrate on fishing. If you want to catch fish with a fly rod, the less you look at it or think about it, the better.

Amen.

Dont own, have never picked up an Echo. But blue collar rods like the Echo (and blue collar reels) were the mainstay during the glory days of glass.

Granted, some were better than others, and there are plenty of fine vintage and new blue collar glass rods around today. Not "trophy rods" but serviceable, journeyman fishing rods. IMO we are fortunate to have so many choices in glass rods.

Aurelio- let's see a pic!! John does some amazing work! My 4wt is still my favorite and the seat and new grip made it even better.

I think Echo's Glass rod is a great looking rod at a great price. The quest for matching the rod with the right line comes with rods of any price tag.

I have the 5wt Echo and no issues with the cork. It's a fine rod. No problems with my rod!

Thanks for the compliments guys. This was the first time I tried to retrofit a cap and ring seat, and I found it a little tricky making sure the mortise lined-up with the guides and alignment dots.
