I have used my Echo 4 wt. 7'6" rod twice now, and netted 8-10 trout, so I think I have enough experience to form an opinion.

First, this is the rod that got me into fiberglass. I LOVED the way it cast in the parking lot, and on the water it's even better. It is buttery smooth, so elegant to use from a float tube (I don't stream fish much), and the distance is remarkable--50' easy with a floating line. I use a generic 4 wt Orvis line.

What I noticed with the first few fish I caught, all small (10" -12" browns) is that the rod seemed a bit dead in feel. It performed fine, just lacked some soul. When I hooked and landed a 19" wild trout, the rod handled the fish beautifully, but I still got that dead feeling. No intrinsic complaints as to fish handling, just a slight lack of connection with the fish. I think the somewhat parabolic nature of the rod may be the culprit.

Compared to my Steffen 5/6 it's not in the same ballpark. The Steffen is about twice as much new, feature for feature, and IMO twice the rod. It comes down to budget. My plan is to ultimately replace it with a Steffen 4/5 if I can find a good buy, but until then the $200 Echo will suffice nicely. For $200 it's a good deal and a pleasure to cast. Feel with a fish on, that's my only complaint, and it's minor, on balance.

Does anyone have any info (weight, action?) on Echo's new 9 foot 6 weight glass? Has anyone purchased one?
Thanks, Jay

I'm interested too in order to get opinions about Echo's Big Water rods. I already have Orvis Superfine Glass and Blue Halo 8'0" #5 but a little longer rod is much better while deep wading.

Checking with Echo, the 9 footer comes in at 3.8 oz., which is pretty good.

It's a lot softer and slower than I thought it would be. It flexes well into the butt, feels fairly light, and will be a good streamer/popper rod for smallmouths. I like to use TT lines and it feels good with an old TT 6/7 line that I like to use for smallies. I like the thinnish grip and the cork reel seat, the caramel color with the green wraps looks very Phillipson-like. I can't think of a long glass rod that is this slow, and I've cast a bunch.

So does it compare to an FF84?

I cast an FF84 a few years ago, and if I recall correctly it was more of a 4/5 rod. The action of the 9 foot Echo is pretty close with a DT5, but IMO the 84 would be a better dry fly rod. I'll bring it to Allenberry if you're coming.

Carl, Sometimes we fit our rods into niches that we want them to be and only want to fish them as. I wouldn't use this rod with anything but a 6/7 wt line and wouldn't use it for anything other than smallmouths.

Jay, That's a pretty good niche for a rod. I have more 6/7wt rods than anything else. I get a mixed use of Smallmouth and pond bluegill/largemouth fishing out of them. My FF84 comment was in regard to your mentioning how slow the rod is. I find the FF84 to be the slowest of the Fenwicks and slower than most people want to fish.

The FF84 is a very smooth casting rod that pairs well for me with 5 or 6. I haven't developed a strong preference whether it be WF or DT. I can't see it as a 4.

My thought was how the 9' Echo compares with the FF90-3. My initial thought is that while they are both 6 weights, the Fenwick (labeled as a 6/7) is a strong 6 and better for me as a 7 weight. Although I have not yet cast the Echo, from the comments I envision it as leaning more to a softer 6.

Yeah, I couldn't get the 84 to work for me, too soft and underlining with a 4wt didn't help. It's a quirky rod.

I decided to get the 8'6" 5 weight and like it better than the 9 footer. Fishing it with a Triangle Taper 6 was perfect. It's pretty tough to build a really good 9 foot glass rod.

A bit reluctant to share because the info is so sketchy, but I just received an email blast from a fly shop about the recent IFTD show. One of the items that the author highlighted is a new "Bad Ass Glass" rod from Echo. The write-up included a picture showing a blue blank marked 890-4, so obviously a 4 piece, 9' 8 wt. Unfortunately, the write-up did not indicate whether the 8 wt is the only heavier weight offering or part of a new series, what the price point will be or when it/they will be available. A quick Google search didn't reveal anything more about this new rod or line of rods. Anyway, something to watch for down the road if you're looking for a heavier weight glass rod, especially since Echo's past pricing would suggest that the pricing for the new offering(s) will be less than the Epics in corresponding weights.

Gearboy, sounds like the 9' 6wt was pretty slow, how does the 8'6" 5wt compare? Good large nymph/streamer rod for trout?

Be interesting to see what people think of these. The MSRP for the rod is $50 less than what a corresponding Epic blank (888, 990, Bandit, Boca) goes for.
