I don't know if you read the T.F.M. post today but the Cabela's C.G.R. series fly rods are 25% OFF for at least the next couple weeks. I wasn't given a hard date when the sale ends so I'd jump on this sooner than later.

Thanks Cameron. One more rod that won't get fished enough.

I'll wait until it arrives to update the board's running total for 2012.

I picked up the 7'6" 5/6 wt today just too god of a price. As soon as I fish it I will give my opinion on the rod.

Upstreeam ... which model did you get?

Steveks ... I like the 5/6 a lot. I liked it best with a six. Great all around workhorse fly rod.

Cameron, I got the 876-3, so now I've bookended their lineup. Keep saying I need to do more warmwater, we'll see if I find the time.

I finally got to fish my CGR 6wt yesterday. I paired it with a Cabela's Prestige Premier reel, and all I can say is that it feels great. Roll cast very good and throws nymph rigs just as good as any rod I have. I have only caught bluegill and crappie so far with it. I can't wait to get into some carp with it.

I walked through a Cabela's in Scarborough, Maine, the other day and didn't see the 'glass rods prominently displayed. Didn't ask, so they might have been around someplace, but they weren't in a central spot as they had been 6 months ago or so. Given that I might have just missed them, I wonder if they are on prominent retail display in other stores.

I received my 6'6" #4 CGR last week and took it to the river today. I have had a fiberglass rod I the past (Fenwick #6) and this was a totally different experience. I normally use a 9' #4 graphite rod, so I swapped my reel over to the CGR and gave its go. I was amazed! The rod was like an extension of my arm - natural, responsive and sensitive.

I have been wanting a shorter rod for when the water is high (keep it out of the trees), but I was concerned that this one would be too short to perform well. After fishing 7 hours, I can tell you that there's no problem on that front. Being so much more flexible, I think going too much longer would have made the rod unmanageable.

I was also a bit concerned about the reel seat, but I had absolutely no problems with the ring setup. It was surprisingly solid and reliable.

From reading reviews, I was concerned that this thing was going to come crashing down if I tried to go more than 30 ft. on a cast. Let me tell you, I was amazed at how far (and how easily) this little rod can go! I was surprised when I shot out to 50 ft. and felt like I could have gone farther if needed.

Observations from a day of use:

1. Three sections are easier to deal with than four on this size rod.

2. With a Sage 2030 reel mounted to the rod, the balance point was about two inches in front of the reel. I noticed myself grabbing the back of the handle to get the right balance. I recommend a lighter reel to match this rod (Orvis Battenkill Bar Stock or Cortland Retro).

3. If you're used to a graphite rod, you will need to slow your stroke WAY down to get the action right on this rod. I locked it in towards the end of the day and the rod came alive! It is somewhat forgiving if you overpower it, but I slowed down to the point that would stall my graphite rod and had incredible results (may vary depending on line - see below).

4. I used what I had for my graphite setup, so my line was Rio Grand #4. Although this worked, I think it may have been on the heavy side for this rod since it was designed to load a fast-action graphite rod.

All-in-all, a great value at $85 shipped to my door. Now I understand why everyone raves about glass. I think with the right reel and some WF4F line, this will be a killer setup!

BTW, I mostly threw small dries to trout sipping on the surface of the water. I tried a wooly bugger, but that was early in the day before I got the casting stroke dialed in. My impression is that this is still not going to cast streamers well at all. Large dries were a bit of a problem as well since the rod doesn't have enough punch to drive them out (especially if there is any wind).

To sum up, a great rod at a great price that fills a gap in my lineup. This will be the go to rod when the water is down, the wind is reasonable and the fish are rising to dries.

crap, I just missed the sale ... I had everything ready to go the day before it ended, got side-tracked ... went back and checked a couple of days ago and they were back up to retail. I still ended up buying the 6'6" 4wt. Really looking forward to getting it and throwing some dries out on rivers ranging from the Deschutes to little Cascade creeks you can jump across.

It was difficult, but I'm a bit proud of myself for resisting the sale. Of course I'm also disappointed I didn't buy myself a new rod.

Hello all. I'm new to your wonderful forum. I'm honored to be a member.
Maybe this is old news but, with the introduction of the CGt, Cabela's has the CGR on sale for $59. My local store in Lehi, Utah had a decent selection. Purchased a 6' 6" 4wt and I'm tickled to death with it. Hope to through some dry's tomorrow on the Provo.

Welcome to the board from one wasatch fronter to another.

That would be an interesting fight if you tie into one of the bruiser browns in the river.

FWIW, my local Cabela's is selling all remaining CGr glass fly rods out at $49.95 ea. as of today.

They also had one new CGt 6.5 ft., 4 wt., 3-piece on the rack for $104.95. I nabbed the latter and would appreciate any thoughts on the new (brown) line of glass rods with "tip over" style ferrules. A bit nicer, IMO, than the earlier series, at least cosmetically.

I seen that on the "bay" auction site there is a slightly used CGR 7'6" 7/8WT rod/combo up. The price is at only $85.00 for the combo. That's pretty sweet!
