Even a wood insert would be light enough if he did a sliding band. Got to have a smaller diameter and shorter length cigar handle too.

I didn't want the fancy wood seat so instead ordered it with the all aluminum seat, which looks very similar to the old Powell reel seat. Mark is very high on these and said they're very light and have a nice, classic look with his rods.

I am waiting for an 8' 4/5wt. rod with the all aluminum real seat. Mark sent me a picture. It is very similar to the old Powell and quite nice. The standard seat with a wood insert won't fit the blank because the hole is too small. However, the upgrade Struble seat will fit larger blanks such as the 8' 4/5wt.

Couldn't you have tried another reel? Just curious? Really that bothersome to make you send it back?

The RYOBI is 2.2 onces naked and the rod balanced 4" back from the front of the handle.Any way he made the handle shorter, made a cork reelseat and used alum. hardware and now it balances 1/2" back from the front. He moved the stripper 2" down towards the butt and added another snake guide wich seemed to make the tip a little livelier in a good way and got rid of the clicking sound.NOW there is no disconect when you cast if that makes sense, the rod and line feel as one.It felt great with 2' of line out and 8' leader, also handeled 2 and 3wt line equaly well ... aurelio

I can't wait to try it out and review this rod. It should be interesting to see how the new "autograph" rod will compare to the "original recipe". I plan on testing it against my rod with the same set of reels as well as lines. Hopefully it will give some insight on the changes made.

I built one of Marks graphite 8 weights with the blue deluxe finish for a good friend. Three piece. It is an outstanding rod. The same exceptional and smooth casting qualities that are found in his glass rods are shared with his graphite models. He is a very talented man. Alec

I also have a 7/8 9' graphite from Mark. Terrific progressive action from butt to tip. Throws a nice line. I often wish that Yellowstone Angler Shootout would include one of Mark's rods. I would be able to gauge the subjectivity behind their findings if a custom rod like a Steffen or Mcfarland were in the mix.

Nice to see that there are a few models available that are not listed on his site.Time for a update I think.

Ordered a 8'6 8-9wt blank for steelhead last year.I can't say how nice Mark is to deal with great communication, great product from a great guy!

+1

speaking of updates, I've had my 8'6" 7/8 out a few places in the last year ... let's see, steelhead, SRCs, rockfish, surfperch, sculpin (while surfperch fishing), pink salmon (hooked, not landed), D redsides, whitefish ... and two "somethings" hooked and never seen due to break off.

so far, so good ...

I still have a place in my quiver for a 10/11 & a 3/4 to round out my "needs"

from steffens site

'Blanks have a natural, un-sanded, unpainted, gray finish.'

Does a finished rod come to you like that? or is that just if YOU are ordering a blank to make your own rod?

Mike

Mike, that's the graphite rod. The 'glass is reddish-brown--chestnut is the term they use--a classic appearance for a 'glass rod. As far as I know, the description applies to the blank as received for building, or the blank as received in a finished Steffen Brothers rod. I'm sure a message to Steffen would bring you any details on possible finish variations or options.

I have a 8'6 4/5 3 piece graphite Steffen in his premium finish which is a sanded green blank, cobalt blue wraps and a Struble seat with wood insert. It's a great rod, the action reminds me of Winston's old IM6. I believe Mark quit offering the premium option several years ago and now sells only unpainted rods and blanks.

Here's something I've wondered: could a custom rod builder sand and paint the blank? Would it be too much work, or too much harmful toxic dust, etc, to be practical?

Not that I need another form of temptation where fly rods are concerned ... :rolleyes

Yes, a custom builder could sand and paint a blank, but there might be several caveats about doing so. Steffen would be the first to ask whether that is feasible with their blanks, and even if it is, whether it is desirable.
