The Diamondback/Cortland rod rep came by the store today bearing two toys that got me excited enough to order them both. The first was the new 7'6" 3wt Diamondglass rod. The rod cast beautifully both far and close. It felt a little heavy in the hand, giving reassurance that it could handle any size fish that was thrown at it. And it seemed to handle both a three weight double taper and a 4 weight weight forward with ease. This series has rods from 6' 2wt, to 8'6 4wt ... though he only had the 3wt today.

The second goodie that he brought along was the Cortland Retro reel with is a 129 dollar classic click and pawl, anodized aluminum finish and an exposed palming rim. Designed to compete against the likes of the Hardy Lightweights this reel sounds good, looks good, and should be a great choice for anyone trying to fish with a limited budget, but without a compromise on quality. It comes in a 3/4 and a 4/5 size and is appropriately sized ... the 3/4 is tiny and light, the 4/5 is larger but still light enough to match rods 8' and smaller.

The new Diamondglass rods and Cortland Retro reels will available sometime between February and March.

I think they are supposed to list for around $300. I think that is actually a bit less than the list price of the original Diamondglass rods.
