I have the F2 825 and it really is a dry fly rod. The tip is not designed to cast a streamer or nymph rig. It works well with soft hackles, dries and small terrestrial patterns. It's a great casting rod however it won't do everything.

Welcome back to FFR Scud Dog! I thought about you a week or two ago when I saw your EBay listing for that Galvan 3.25 (which sold for a surprisingly high amount to someone else). You hadn't posted here in about 3 years. I hope you are well.

I haven't cast the F2 5wt, but everyone who has says it is soft and for dries only. I owned and sold the 774 for the same reason. The 653 is very different and IMO is a well-balanced short 3wt that is crisp and responsive - more like the old F series which I prefer.

Thanks for your kind words guys. Glad to be back.

Giogio, what 4WT line are you using? The issue may likely be the line itself. I have the same rod. It's a favorite of mine. I spooled an Airflo WF4 long taper onto my Islander IR2, placed it on the Scott and it's been perfect! I also know plenty of folks that wouldn't like that combo.
Hope you find the line that works for you.
I knew a man that bought a Sage years ago. He didn't like it at all. Wanted to eBay it. He volunteered that the line he was using was an old line his brother use to grass cast with. DUH! I suggested a new line. He bought a new line and wound up becoming a big time Sage fan.

Hi scud dog - I have used a bunch of lines on the 754. I have even found some 4wt lines I can live with more than others. One is the Barrio GT 125 (long belly WF line made in Scotland). This is a line that's on the light end of the 4 wt spectrum and has a longish front taper - it works well with the Kenney 813 too. So I continue to like this rod with DT 3s, light WF 4 wts and 5 wts but I am never fully pleased with DT4s. I don't want to pick my brains over it more than I already have but this rod definitely has a load zone where the action abruptly transitions into the butt that's a bit awkward to deal with. I suspect the DT 4 just extends and amplifies this transition zone.

I like the rod's combination of slow taper and fast recovery and find myself fishing it relatively often despite its peculiarity - - which may well be unique to this particular rod.

Giogio,
You've managed to successfully verbalize what it's like to fish that rod for a while.
I'm never sure why I like it as much as I do but I do! I've had folks tell me they felt it was too stiff, etc. Folks were clamoring for Scott to create a smoother, softer rod. They did yet I suspect there's now just more debate over which generation of Scott glass rods folks prefer.
This is eerie, but you brought up a few things I'm interested in. I'm on the waiting list for an 813. Let me know about it! I'm also interested in grabbing a Barrio line. Inquiring minds want to know baby!

Scuddog ,'The Kenney 813 is among the best casting rod of any material and/or length and line weight. All of Larry's rods are awesome and he is class to deal with. You will be pleased.

Scud, I absolutely agree with JASTrout. The Kenney 813 is simply incredible and the reason I sold my Steffen 8' 3/4, an incredible rod in its own right. IMO the 813 will be one of those Hall of Fame glass rods in the future. Larry's vast experience with glass certainly shines through in all of his rods.

I'm really happy with the 835 so I figured the 813 would be good. Now, I'm psyched after reading your opinions on it. I also plan to order a Barrio line soon.
BTW, how do you think the Kenney rods compare with the new Scott rods? I thought there may be some similarities but I get the sense from reading these posts that there isn't.

Overall, are the new
Scott rods their best yet or do you like some of the older runs better?

I'm a much bigger fan of the Scott brown and black blanks ... crisper.

The f2 653 for me has been amazing, the only Kenney rod I tried was a 5 wt. and found it reminded me of the old orvis far and fine felt tip heavy or a heavy swing weight...aurelio

For me, the only F2 that really shines is the 663, and it is among the nicest of glass rods from any era. The two other Scotts that made a significant impression on me were the yellow glass F79 and my brown glass F703.

Fellows...I just got word that the four piece 7'2" three weight "Japan Special" from last year will be added to the F2 line up starting in late July. I have one of these fly rods and it's hands down my favorite from the series.

I did a write up on this fly rod last year and Jim Bartschi from Scott Fly Rod Company sent some narrative which is included as well.

If you are an F2 fan than this is one to search out and get on the order list for.

Thats great news. I have been wanting to cast one of those Japan specials. Now I just need to get the local shop to get one in when they become available.

Fellows...it will be listed as the Scott F2 723/4 model. They are dropping the "Japan Special" from the name but it's the same fly rod.

Good Cam, good Aurelio. A man either is still young or feels that way when he maintains the policy, "If you see something you like, get two." Or three. I am getting too old to do it very much anymore, but I don't need to because I did it for so long. So I recommend it as ever. When you get the new ones to work, Aurelio, let's hear and see more.

How does it compare with the black F703/3? I imagine it is slower, but what else can you tell me? The F703 was my small stream rod before getting heavily into bamboo.
