It's no secret that I'm a fan of fiberglass fly rods. That's the material I started with back in the mid 1970s when I signed on with Harry Wilson to launch the Scott rod company. and hirty five years later I still feel glass is a potentially superior material for building some fly rods. For a number of years I've been working on a few glass models that met my own standards for performance and appearance. I've gone through a number of mandrel redesigns and material changes, a couple of blank fabricators, and have finally come up with four models that I think hit sweet spots for glass:
7'3"

They may be spartan but they sure sound beautiful (especially with the cork seat). An 8' 3" 5 wt. - very nice. I look forward to seeing some photos. Good luck Larry.

Larry,
I wish you all the best in this endeavor. I hope it's truly enjoyable, and also somewhat profitable as well.

Based on a photo of one of your tan blank rods I saw from another board member, I'm sure these will be beautiful and really special rods.

Lord help me, but all the models sound fantastic ... and I'd like to get one of each ... but can't do it right now. But I sincerely hope to get a couple of your rods at some point.

Hey guys, a while back there was a discussion about smoothest rods and Holy Grail rods. I mentioned that the top one on my list was from a maker that wanted to remain anonymous. Well it looks like he ain't anonymous any more because he just told you about his rods himself. I can't begin to tell you how much I like Larry's 7'9" 4wt. It is freakin' phenomenal.

As long time fan of Scott rods, I have to tell you that Larry has exceeded the casting feel and fishability of any of the Scott trout rods I've ever tried including my long time favorite 7'7" 4wt 3pc Scott G rod which I sold when this rod came into my hands last summer. Harry Wilson would be very proud of what his protege has done with this rod. I haven't cast the other models in Larry's new line of fiberglass rods as of yet. I wasn't even aware he had a 8'1" 3wt until now. I might have to spring for one of those.

I think his prices are also very reasonable. Keep in mind that these are blanks of Larry's design and specifications. Larry truly is one of the all time great fiberglass rod designers. Do yourself a favor and get on his list before it gets way too long and people start buying their spots on his list like people do with Brandon or Gray cane rods.

Here's what they look like. Larry's stock grip is different. The grip on this one was a special request because of my big meaty hands.

Phew! I've been waiting to talk about these rods. I've said this many times - the best fiberglass rods ever made are being made today. Based on the limited time I've had with mine, Larry Kenney's 8'3" is one of these "best ever" rods. I'm working on a Wiki page for these rods and I'll try to have it up soon.

In the meantime, Larry sent me this photo of one of his 8'3" 4/5 weights. I hope he won't mind me posting it here.

Tom

Larry Kenney, thanks for announcing this, and the others for showing photos. To see these seminal designs revived, reconsidered, and refined to the best ever--and by the same people--is a pleasure. When I admired the Scotts back in the day, they were too pricey for a young guy on a budget. But now might be the time. "Spartan" is a modest word to use when the elegant simplicity speaks for itself.

Those are beautiful and unique looking rods! I'm curious about two things ... Price? and any chance a wood reel sea insert could/will be added?
Thanks.

One of those Kenney five weights is calling my name. Yet another list I'd like to get on.

Very very nice!

Thanks for the added info, Tom and Crustybugger.

My computer monitor shows Crustybugger's photos to show the blank color as a light tan, whereas Tom's photos appear more of a dark olive green. Whose photos are closer to "coffee with cream?"

And does Mr. Kenney's progressive actions resemble any other makers' actions?

On my computer, my pictures seem a little closer. My rod is a small bit darker than my picture. It's interesting that Larry describes the color of his blanks as coffee with cream because that's how I've described it to others too. I call it a latte color.

Crusty,
How's the action on your rod?

The color depends somewhat on the lighting. My wife thought the rod was somewhat olive colored. I will try to get some photos against an 18% gray card tomorrow.

I think reality is somewhere between the photo I posted and the close up of the signature that Crusty posted.

As they used to say at the Grateful Dead concerts, "the light is getting good now." Latte, Crusty, latte? Up in Michigan there by the Fox River at the little store off Route 2, do they have a machine now? Do they allow a guy with a fiberglass rod to go into a bistro like that? You'd be right at home with an elegant reincarnation like those LKs, but wouldn't you want to go around back, get a paper cup and some coffee that stays black no matter how much cream you put it in it? Now walk down the railroad track and sit on the bridge, place the rod just so on the creosote railroad ties, look into the chai tea stained river and see if the fish are there.

Whrlpool, I'm ashamed that I got caught up in our pop culture thinking people would know what I meant. If I had said it was the color of the Maple River near St. Johns when the sun is shining, nobody would have understood me. And you're right that there aren't many places that let me come though the front door. I usually have to ask for scraps through the screen door in the back. But I've noticed that before they throw me the scraps, they usually ask me where the best place to fish is that day!Image
