We need a topic anyway. This reel is on my bench, mostly finished.
And it's photogenic.

Nice reel Ron! I sure hope the knurling’s aggressive look is exaggerated by the photo? If not, i’d be afraid of all the skin id loose along the way. As a machinist my eye naturally scoured the “details” and i was pleasantly surprised to see the screw heads timed on the crank side. Not so; on the off side but easy enough to rectify if one was so inclined.

All those years of working on high end Pumps, Turbines and Compressors taught me “you never had to really invent some new thing, just replicate O.E.M parts using better materials! In looking over many of you're offerings it’s clear folks in the Tackle industry understand the same thing.

Thanks guys.
A happy purchase at the current exchange rate, and takes persistance to score an affordable example on Yahoo.
The handle is NS Craft (another better buy on Yahoo than most vendors listing stock), and the brass parts and fasteners came from Bright River.
BC720SSS is 5500C-size, though feels more compact for the same spool diameter

Of course, used my long-time broker Masamichi at noppin.com. I submitted a Bright River shopping list (never expect them to have stock of everything). When he contacted them, they were out of the L/S spindle cap I ordered. He followed through and ordered the top-hat cap, and gave me the option of letting him return it.

Isuzu reels are nice inside, too, though this one needed a lot of TLC (mostly cleaning 10x excessive old grease + new drag washers) - and a photo of where it started. But the used condition, no box, and aftermarket handle together got me a good deal in the Isuzu Yahoo.jp market. A big part of the demand is that Isuzu sells all their marked reels in batches by lottery

Bright River calls the round drag wheel LK, giving a nod to Lefty Kreh for machining his own brass one for his 6000C

I have a goal for the rod and niche, which is down the road...

Thanks again. This is my 3rd "Japan Underground" Isuzu reel, the first two were both NIB, a Smith Ltd. Plugger (1500C size with oval side plates), and BC620SSS (4500C size) finished for Headhunters Lure shop. Also good hunting to find these affordable deals.
Both are striking in their different ways.

And like the reels are made in batches, the aftermarket parts, rod handles and blades - everything in the Japan underground market is made in limited batches, and sells out until they get around to making a new batch. Other marques are also in Isuzu machine shop queue. The lure shops sell on their websites, Smith Ltd. sells their reels and Try-Angle sells their aftermarket parts on Amazon.jp - you have to watch to score one, because they will sell out quickly, and won't be back around for a few years.

But more than looks, Isuzu benchmade reels stand out for function.
I love my raced Ambassadeurs, they can be made close in casting performance, but still not quite up to Isuzu.
(Ball-bearing LW is an aftermarket upgrade on Ambassadeur, but Isuzu bench begins there)
No words for Isuzu drive smoothness - there is nothing like friction anywhere in these drives.

And nothing down on Ambassadeur - they will fish through the next generation, and the next.

Dang, that's a nice reel...!!

I am slightly poorer because of the desire to purchase stuff you've exposed me to on this page, but I'll resist chasing one of these down for the time being. ;)

However I'm intrigued by the "LK round drag wheel." I never knew that about Lefty and it makes me admire him even more!!

OT & not casting tackle related but:

Thanks for the link Nick.
I'd advise everybody to hold off Plugger purchases until Smith presents a new run with Amazon.jp sales.
There's a current auction for a stunning black Try-Angle BC420SSSC-T3 that may end below retail, but one would have to rush to get in their auction reserve.

I was very happy to get my Plugger for 10% over retail, and current Yahoo speculator listings are 40% to 100% over retail.
Likewise, I was floored to get my upgraded Headhunter 620 in auction for 10% below retail, only a few months after it was OOS at the lure shop - my timing was great, because there was a concurrent Isuzu lottery for BC620SSS in their marking, and my auction seller probably listed his (my) reel because he got a lottery slot.

The auction snipe on my 720 was $260, which was a happy ante to begin my OP project.
The frame has plating chips - down the road, I may try Goober Reel Works to see if they can order me a new 720 frame and a 620 crowned gear set to swap in for my used gears.

Bright River also offers their round drag wheels for Abu, again in batches - I think they may currently have LK brass and aluminum for Ambassadeur, and LK black aluminum for LH Ambassadeur.
Since I always set my drag with spring scale, I prefer round over star drag - here are the 28-mm round drag knobs on my Plugger and a 4500C

Now the question comes up whether you've added an Ambassadeur - I searched your posts, but didn't find one.
Could be a great project for a machinist.

When it comes to these Bright River parts, gotta love the ball that Mr. Kikuchi ran with.

ps - my last upgrade, Try-Angle dual-BB idler gear and dual-micro-BB-pawl and rider will arrive today. I'm not sure how the blue-grey rider ended up on my project reel, but my new part is the correct silver. While I did the same on my 620 Headhunter, I'm taking good photos at my bench today to show the Isuzu LW configuration, and will add a post later.

Finished installing my last 2 upgrades.
Taking down the LW, which is held in place by an e-clip on the worm shaft.
There's a ball bearing retainer and a sleeve that shoulders on the bearing inner race and spins with the worm shaft and e-clip

The parts I received and LW assy going back together.
The ball bearing and retainer first, worm sleeve and rider;
most booger e-clip I've ever installed (remembered from my BC620) - bent one and had a spare.
The pawl bearings and washer are the smallest of either you've ever handled.
The ball bearings drop the pawl into the worm gear groove like a vacuum is sucking it in.

Dual-BB idler gear - the slickest and longest-spinning result I've ever seen in an idler gear upgrade.

The result made a noted improvement in my spool spin - as I found on my BC620, the ball-bearing pawl upgrade bounces the rider direction change at each end.
First front view photo of my project reel.

Actually i’ve got 3 Of them, a 6500 and a couple 4000 series, but the way i fish them they’re probably fine. Things stay plenty busy around here with no room for a “bait project”.
Regarding those trim pieces, they look like a 300 series brass, free machining and affordable but probably heavier than O.E.M. This kind of thing is best left to an operator running automated equipment and building components for someone who has a developed market. The brass gives a nice contrasting look but when i think up-grade i’m usually looking for some mechanical improvement and if it looks better great but appearance is not #1.
I see this stuff different than most folks knowing what goes into it and if i saw those same components in Titanium i’d have greater interest. In time those brass pieces will be ugly and needing some attention, the screws are all-ready looking a bit flat.
Usually brass is plated which would increase the eye appeal and add some oxidation protection. The wheel could be an Aluminum Bronze or possibly just fresher, it has a little different look.
The internal work you do on them is quite interesting to me as i can recognize the improvements that will only be seen as they are used. And i especially like the comprehensive write ups; detailing the details. Keep up the good work!

This is off topic now, and ends here (guess not) - cathodic plating on brass doesn't improve its corrosion resistance, it makes it more susceptible to pitting. The brass requires a certain amount of care to allow it to patinate over time. I'm a licensed PE, metallurgist, corrosion engineer, monitor and predict life on those gas turbines and plant systems. Education, 40 years experience, and over 20 years in antique tackle hobby. I may be the only guy you know who applies continuum mechanics to rod tapers and reel inertia. I promise not to bore everyone by stating this more often.

If anyone has reel photos they feel belong on this thread, please feel free to post them.

There's more fallacy above. OEM parts are heavily chromed brass, and are simply heavy. (Modern reels go the other way, sacrificing structure and life for light weight on paper.) There are lighter aftermarket parts to choose, but there's no significant weight difference between an OEM star drag and the LK brass drag wheel. After the spool and cast inertia, the most important weight to shed is in the handle, because of leverage and torsion on your grip.

You can get an Ambassadeur 1500C down from 9 ounces to 6 ounces. The first ounce from the spool, which is most important in cast performance.
From there, it's about $200/oz to shed more weight, so use it judiciously.

Well, im too new around here to start irritating folks so let me apologize if i’ve rubbed you wrong! And while we’re “off topic” i’ll offer these pictures of a G.E frame 3; I built as a retirement gift for a fellow one time. I understand eye appeal and while it was a huge hit 15 years ago, im sure it’s a mud fence now; heck i was a lot purdier back then too! Peace Brother!

Nice model effort. I've been inside so many turbine half shells, frame 3 to frame 9, Alaska to Africa, I'd rather have the OP reel for a presento.
Consider the gas turbines the means to get to the reel.
A case and rotor lift is an impressive sight - the lift supervisor is the sharpest millwright on site.
The crane operator is the highest-paid individual on site, usually wearing gold chains.

On BR forum, received a query that I'm surprised no one asked here.

The aftermarket add-on (Glass Eye) is a line/hook keeper, It was on the received reel, though installed backwards.
It swivels to pinch the line, and has a hook notch in the back.
The Japanese just don't put hook keepers on rods - their approach of wide on the reel has the advantage of keeping your line from twisting on the rod tip.
I'll also add the handle nut is titanium KDW, which ends up on all my bait reels (and has a sticker on my kayak cooler).

My latest build; '75 2500C, Avail 2540R spool, line guide, driveshaft, pinion BB, and click wheel, Valleyhill 2BB LW and 2BB idler gear, Hedgehog Air bearings, and a Haneda Craft 60mm handle. I run this one magged with a pair of 4x3mm and a single 4x4mm magnet. I built this guy for Great Lakes steelhead, coho, and Atlantics. I don't have any glass to put it on at the moment but do have a couple of very nice JDM rods; a Smith Troutin'Spin 6'5" ML and a Palms Rera Kamuy 6'9" ML. In case anybody is wondering why such a short rod for my intended species, I'm usually fishing them in the smaller tributaries where those 9'+ rods can become unwieldy with all of the trees and brush. The rods I am using were designed for fishing migratory steelhead and cherry salmon in the smaller mountain streams of Hokkaido. They are right at home here in the Great Lakes tribs.

Thanks for posting Robert, that's a beauty.
your bikes made me throw in my '57 Raleigh Lenton bike porn (it was a hit again today on the Sunday morning Alamodome sprint, and we had a good group for coffee after)
Image Image Image Image

Robert, those are also great rod choices for your small water, big fish niche.
Mine will be inshore dog-walking 1/4 oz (++), and I'll add it later this month - I've ordered my rod handle (grip) so the batch doesn't get away, and matches nicely - rod blade and details later, when it's all in hand.

The rod grip is Bright River Rivermaster. The rod blade, Headhunters 1800 IM6 4-power, 1/4 to 2 oz.
Tenyru blank finished for Headhunters by Bright River.
The prismatic mylar wraps grow on you

This is my favorite hook keeper ever

I added the brass thumb rest to the reel, and swapped the knob for Avail green marble.

Have it lined with 8-lb YZH to get out this afternoon for initial mag brake set

With 8-lb YZH and 1/8 oz for mag set, this rod casts like it's supposed to cast the light weight (MH rated 1/4 to 2 oz).
It's lighter in hand than my 7' Crowder IM6 ML, and notably lighter than my S-glass MM - I'm going to enjoy this.
Braid next.
Ambassadeur combos and Isuzu combos.

Thanks Mike - clearly, Headhunters was aiming this rod at Isuzu silver finish.
The 1800 is OL in mm (with a single grip - my double grip makes it 4" longer). They also just ran a 1650 version, a niche I have covered.
Both rods are called Kingfisher, the 1800 Pied Piper, the 1650 Highliner.
The label font was an allusion to Fenglass 2000.
Image

I couldn't be happier with the feel and casting this combo.
With the weight in the grip and reel, the progressive IM6 tip feels light.
It feels like the most versatile dog-walking rod I've ever handled.
Today, I have the reel lined with my Varivas Si-X PE#1.5, but dreary slop outside today - clears up tomorrow, but too windy - maybe Monday to proof-cast my mag set.
Image

and here's that hook keeper holding a wood plug that's a perfect first-light mullet pattern.
The action - weight in the rear drops the tail, and the flukes dive the nose - it will make a great wake.

I had one of the original Daiwa Millionaire reels. The model that Daiwa got sued over by Abu.It was a nice reel but it wasnt anywhere as well made as that Isuzu.
