What can you tell me about this Grizzly Fenwick model FL1084 fly rod. Looks like it is a steelhead salmon type rod. Measures 10'-2", 2 pc, 7 guides. Looks like it was never used. I can't find anything about it in my Fenwick book. Thanks for any help

For a short time in the 60s, Fenwick rod blanks were sold with the Grizzly Fenwick label. They were not the exact same blanks used for the production Fenwick rods. Your rod would have been built in a custom shop, or by a competent non-commercial builder. Usually custom shops would add their own labeling, or signature to the rod.

The model number on the blank implies it was sold as a fly rod blank, 108 inches in length. Quite a few nice spinning rods have been built on fly rod blanks.

Despite what it measures now, Tom is right, the 108 means it started life as a 9ft blank.

Neat old rod!

Grizzly Fenwick fly rod shown. This particular model casts a range of lines well. Grizzly Fenwick rods I have seen do not have the diamond braid of the standard Fenwick rods which makes them more attractive to my eye.

Another member Chip_W previously posted an image his model without braid wrap similar to the one shown above.

Those type of rods were pretty common around here and were all custom built .They called them noodle rods.Used for bait or lure fishing light line on Lake Michigan tribs for steelhead and salmon.I had a couple built on Fenwick flyrod blanks.I think they had a ceramic guide every 6 inches. They were very soft and were designed to absorb a lot of shock from large fish in small creeks and some big rivers.I was gifted those rods and passed them on to a young guy who fishes hard all winter for steelhead. The fish are quite spooky in the super clear water and fly lines spook them so drifting bait on light line into the pools they hold in on very light line is effective. You have be a herdy soul to walk far in the snow in freezing Temps just to get a shot at one.

@ Grouse - thanks, that's purdy - nothing like a tastefully finished rod to show off the blank.
