ooh, ooh, green Condex.
A family friend with whom we fished when I was young, stayed with us and his family for a week at a fishing camp on Lake LBJ.
He brought an Eagle Claw spincast rod he had just built from blank matched with a new Johnson Centurion.

Most of my great glass combos were creek fishing when my daughters were really young - and moved quickly to fly rod - or fishing in the dark from Fulton Beach pier.
Do have this photo of my friend's daughter with the Garcia rod from the forum masthead and Penn 716.

Great pics, vintage penn spinning reels are hard to come by in my area.Penn casting reels are common as they use them for Lake Michigan trout and salmon.Even the wore out ones are pricey.Thinking of breaking out the Zebco Cardinals .They were a thing for a while but no one seems to want them .They are smooth little reels and look good on glass old rods.BD what is the smallest vintage penn spinning reel?

Best match I found on my 716 is this Fispo rod which may be a Harnell blank.

The 440 Ottomatic in the masthead photo doesn't go fishing - it's too valuable in its box.
Image
The 410 with aftermarket barstock spool is really nice to fish.

Since we're showing perfect matches, best match for my H-I Star is Luxor A - this is a great rod and killer combo.
Image

Hardy Exalta and Epoxite Registered, match made in glass heaven.
The Exalta knee flips on a square boss, and I flipped around the Phillipson patent seat to get this result.

a rod too tippy to want to fish, but it looks damn good, Heddon Pal Standard and Pflueger Skilkast.

The 716 is the smallest Penn, but I believe the 714 is the exact same size.

Definitely not, 720/22 was the smallest size, and 714 is the same size as a Mitchell 300.
I also have a 712, which is a size up over the 714 - they kept getting bigger, 710, 706, 704
In 1974 716 was the smallest size, and there were 11 models, of greenies, including 6 different sizes.

This combination is not even close. Like Grandpa and grandson. But I just like the way it looks. One of the last Pfluegers on an old steel True Temper Sport Troll. And it will cast a 3/4 oz weight a country mile.

And there is not really any fiberglass in it also. Maybe some resin in the reel knobs.

Steel and cane were really the only good bass rod tapers made postwar until about the '70s, with the exceptions of Harnell, and '60s Conolon, Heddon, and Phillipson Bass Tamer,
The '70s gave us Fenglas Lunkerstik and Lew's, which changed everyone's definitions of bass rods.
The AF&H TrueTemper square-section steel rods are exceptional bass rods.

Image Montague Flash cane (also Heddon cane)

The problem with most glass casting rods, they were just too tippy to be good bass rods.
They work better for spincast, or finesse fishing light weights with a Langley Lakecast or Shakespeare Tournament

Even into the '70s, I bought an ebay Browning to sample, model 910, 6' 2-pc, rated 6-lb test min, 1/4-oz min.
It really belonged with a spincast reel, and I gave it to my friend Tony to match with his Abu 170 (improved with a rebuild and 6-lb YoZuri hybrid line)
The combo made a great light jig rod for Tony to throw at winter put-and-take trout ponds. It cast 1/16 oz better than it cast 1/4 oz.

I found this setup at a flea market, I think this is exactly what I would have been using skulking the Creeks I haunted back in the day. I am cleaning it up and am going to use it soon.

GG i have a 3 pc Wonderod UL that is plain odd.I picked up a 1 piece wonderod UL 5.5 that has ceramic inserts in double foot guides that i have never seen before.I have 3 5.5 GC ULs and of course 308s.How do you like that Shakespeare reel?I am going to keep a couple of these rods but gift most of them to some friends who are into these as well and cool old reels that work well will really make them nice.

I really like the 2200, it is one of my favorites, I have a dozen or so. HAHA I put some nanofil on one and fished ALL day, never had to look down at the reel to see what was going on, it really worked flawlessly. But this reel I had gone over very well, polished the drag stack(felt/stainless) used TSI 321 oil and good grease, the only complaint I have is you cannot flip bail manually, but you just breathe on it with the handle and it snaps back quick.

have one that is unused.. it's a surprisingly nice reel for an early Japan-made spinner, like it a lot. Need to get some line on it and fish it a bit..
