I've got this old howald shakespeare
solid glass casting rod with original canvas
covered aluminum case. The case is made
with a separate pocket for the handle.
I can't turn the chuck that releases its
grip on the rod.The knob is plastic, maybe
bakelite, but rod might not be that old,and handle
is metal.
I'm afraid I'll break something trying the obvious.
it's a nice rod and case
any ideas will be appreciated.

The handle is aluminum pot metal, which is not resistant to corrosion by alkaline water, and the crevice of that threaded joint is the last place to dry when wet.
The corrosion product of aluminum is clay, tiny, gap-filling monoclinic crystals, which can have a very high shear strength.

I had a Stuart with thumbscrew tightened into bakelite spool that finally came apart after a year of spraying it on and off with Boeshield and penetrating oil.

I guess that's what I'll do Bulldog.
I've sprayed it every day for about a week.
Just keep gently twisting and spraying.
No rush, maybe it will break loose one day.
Thanks and nice old reel.

You might try thermal cycling it a few times - this is the right time of year for that, you can set it outside for awhile for the low temp. The plastic piece would likely have a larger coefficient of thermal expansion than the metal so after a few cycles try loosening it when it's warm. Heat alone may loosen it but be very careful about applying heat to that plastic nut.
