Not sure if should be posted here or on Another Spin on Glass. It's a Quandary and will move if necessary.

I was digging through some reel boxes looking for something I still can't find. But, I did find this little Ted Williams. Appears to be a very nice little smooth running reel. Does anyone know what company may have made it or any other history on the reel. Says made in Italy.

I've seen larger versions on the bay which were said to be made for Sears.

Thanks,
Barry

I put it beside a 3/4 Battenkill for size comparison.

I moved this to Another Spin because it is a spinning reel, even though it's a classic.

That's a different classic that happens to me far too often.

Somebody will recognize that, maybe with a flip through a spinfishing book of the time. This thread might ring a bell, and also names some of the books of the time period. viewtopic.php?f=33&t=51549&p=229140&hilit=Classic#p229140 I can't read the complete number in the pic, but if that is the patent number, a search here might turn up details https://patft.uspto.gov/netahtml/PTO/srchnum.htm

Plugged the number in and saying invalid.

The Italian collector of Italian reels on ORCA has a pretty good database on Ted Williams reels.
https://reeltalk.orcaonline.org/viewtop ... 98#p111198

In his introduction post, he identified CopTes of Turin, Giovanni Coppola, as the maker of Ted Williams reels.

Neat little reel. I have a Ted Williams 501 (pretty big) that was made by Zangi in Italy.

Zangi and CopTes are both in Turin, and Cop Tes bought Zangi, I believe before reels were marked for Ted Williams.

I don't recognize either name. But, other than being a little heavy the reel appears very nice quality.

Thanks for all the information.

Barry,
Zangi made all the Orvis spinning reels from the '50s. Credit is given to CopTes in the '70s and '80s, though it's the same company.
CopTes also acquired Alcedo along the way.

Great Information.

I've had good many of the Orvis reels over the years. Although they both run very smoothly the Orvis appeared to be of better quality.

Particularly notice the finish on early Orvis reels seems to last forever and after looking at ebay sales the finish on the Sears reels doesn't appear to hold up nearly as well.

Orvis would probably demand very high quality and could charge more because they're Orvis. While Sears would want best quality they could get, but to keep at a reasonable price point for their customer base. Of course this is just speculation on my part.

Thank You.
