There may already be a thread in amongst these 24 pages but what are everyone's preferred vintage glass spinning rods (and reels) that they actually use? My buddy bought a boat and we're starting to hit some lakes. Sometimes it's fun to spin cast (and even troll) so I'm interested in trying out some vintage glass vs. using modern graphite. Thanks everybody.

I've mentioned this rod before. Shakespeare Wonderglass, 5 foot, 1 piece, very light spinning rod. It is my oldest piece of functional tackle. It is currently on the fourth set of guides; single foot, high frame Fujis that have lasted almost 25 years. I use it with a Shimano Sierra UL500 reel spooled with 4# Ande mono.

I bought the rod in the 70s. I think the date code reads DGK (1974). I recall using it in high school, so made in 1974 and purchased in 74/75 is likely. I have not found the SP 7250 model number in any Shakespeare catalogs. This spinning rod has been used hard, so at 48 years old it is close enough to vintage to qualify.

As much as I admire Harnell and Phillipson ML spinning rods, my all-time favorite L spinning rod is this H-I Star, probably from the Gladding era.

My favorite Vintage Glass Spinning Rod is a Fenwick FS70. I found it about 2 years ago here on the For Sale page.

I no longer have it as it met with an accident in the back of friends truck-homemade lamiglas mb842f. Great all around saltwater light spinning rod. The runner up was built on a glass seeker popping rod.

Alas, as I only own one glass spinning rod it has to be my Eagle Claw Trailmaster #M4TMUL-6-1/2 foot fly/spin rod.

It was the 2nd fishing rod I owned and the first I ever bought new. I pared it with a Garcia Mitchell 408, which was also the first new reel I ever bought.

I still have & fish with both!!

6FootRod,
The little red Daiwa is by far my favorite as well. Mine was paired with the same Daiwa 500c reel. It's a very fun little UL outfit. I own Fenwick's and others but that is by far my favorite. You must have changed out your guides at some point. Mine are the old metal lightweight wire framed guides.

Thanks to all who replied. It took a little while, but the responses have taken off a bit. It looks like mostly ultra-light (or at least lite-ish) rods. Anybody out there use a bigger rod for anything...say surf-casting? How about any thoughts on a Fenwick FS86 spinning rod?

Haven't built it out, but I have a 3-pc 14' ZZiPlex surf rod that has a glass tip section.

My 7' inshore/offshore Berkley TriSport was a great rod, but my first graphite 7-1/2' Browning Hi-Power casting rod was a game changer.

The best glass bass rod I have ever fished is the Falcon.
And my 8'2" Lami Classic Glass steelhead fished inshore is the champion for getting away from boat hull slap.

I have two offshore e-glass rods, and glass blend is becoming very common in modern bass rods.

I have a ten foot Harnell glass conventional that I fish pencil poppers in the cape cod canal with. So far the biggest fish landed is a 48" striper taken at 530 in the morning on a one of Brad 'Hawg Hunter's' pencil poppers in green and yellow Mackerel color. The sight of the fish tracking that plug for ten yards on glass slick calm water sure got the heartrate up :) Coming up on the anniversary this week of that one...

I should add that the glass rod provides a fantastic walk the dog action to the pencil popper.

Late to the game here but, Silaflex 7-foot SP70L mfg 1948-1962 closely followed by the Johnson/Phillipson 7-foot 4S701M. Zebco Cardinal 4 reels all the way. Not exactly ultralight but extremely nice for maximum casting distance with 4 pound test. I have about 30 vintage rods including Fenwick, Garcia, and others but, these are my go to rods.
