Thought I'd give the old Mitchell 301/Conolon 2508 combo a spin the other night with some top water lures. Didn't Catch any giants but sure was fun see the bust bust the top and eat the lure. Some good rod bending action ensued.

Thanks! The rod is almost mint. I hate using it much for fear of marking it up. I have a similar rod that is more "used" and I'll probably switch out. That said, I only use the combo a few times a year. Lots of fun.

nice bass and great outfit. Congrats.
I collect those 1960's Mitchell 300,308 etc. I still have and fish my first one from 1965 or so that was a Christmas gift from my Mother. The reel cost 12 bucks, a princely some in its day.
Found one in an antique dealership in mint condition with original box for $15.

topwater is always the most fun bass fishing.
Buzz baits are my favorite, and my first really bass, 6-1/2 lbs, was on a Jitterbug.

Gotta love a Torpedo for top water ,not many come close . Use to take some nice bass with the Crazy Crawlers a lot to , but an old Jerk-n-Sam (if you can find some nos) , is about the only other old school topwater that still holds a special place in the ole tackle box !!!

Caught many Bucketmouths on a floating Rapala, back in the day...cast, sit, twitch and jerk...

Doug, nice set up...that may be a very early 308 Prince (UK release) with newer bail...

close.. it's a French-made one from 1974, bought in S. Africa, emigrated with me to the US, where I replaced the bail with the clearly superior roller bail once the original had a groove all the way around.. it's a veteran like me ;-)

Very cool that you still have it....Interesting that you bought it in S. Africa, as the Prince reels were initially targeted to be only distributed to the UK, beginning in 1959...all Mitchell reels through the '70s were made in France. If bought new in 1974, the UK distributor may of had a deal with a retailer in S. Africa, or, Mitchell started exporting these reels to countries besides the UK by this time, I'm not sure. The serial number on the bottom of the foot tells us the year it was produced.

The roller bearing line guide is definitely an upgrade.
