I have a 6' two-piece light action Heddon Deluxe spinning rod. It has a faux bamboo paint job, silk winds, and black ferrules - the colors match the deluxe pal fly rods. I'm trying to find some information about this rod, tried classicflyrod, and they suggested posting here. It came in an aluminum Heddon tube, basically the same that you would expect a three-piece, 9' bamboo fly rod to come in. The label unfortunately isn't readable. I am not looking to sell the rod, but just curious about its history.

Would anyone have a Heddon catalog that lists this rod? I would appreciate a scan of the catalog page if you do - I am interested in finding about when it was made and its cost at the time.

Thanks for your help.

I had gone through that thread initially, but the T170 isn't in those catalog pages posted, but did catch on to the use of the 'T'.

I PMed Mark and he was kind enough to send me a catalog page from 1953. Apparently, the T170 was only offered in 1953, the first year of Heddon tubular fiberglass spinning rods, and 1954. The 'T" was dropped after that, so it narrows down the year of manufacture considerably.

The cool thing to me is the cork and balsa grip, which had me scratching my head when I first got the rod.

Thanks to everyone.

Joe, Welcome to the Forum!

Any chance you could post more photos of your rod? That handle is a unique one. By the way, the little 12.2 inscription at the winding check indicates your rod was made in December 1952. That matches the 1953 catalog year. Mark is the guy for Heddon catalogs.

Here are some pictures, I apologize, the light isn't very good.

The ad mentions a 'poplin' bag, so I believe this might be the original (at least, it is, in fact, poplin). The silk winds are in very good shape, but are beginning to dry out in spots, and there are obvious marks on the alternating 'cork/balsa' handle and scattered areas of missing paint. The tube is a 'normal' aluminum tube for that time period, could probably fit a 9' 2-tip bamboo fly rod in it. There isn't much in the way of any color loss on the male ferrule - I assume it's just been stored in the bag/tube for some time. If there are details that you would like to see, please let me know and I'll try and upload something.

never owned a high-grade Heddon spinning rod, but that looks like a fine one - nicely appointed.
That price in 1953 is $275 in today's money.

I always wondered why they used 'browntone grained finish' instead of 'bamboo-like' or something similar. I know when I was researching other rods, especially early Heddon fly rods, I was confused about that, but eventually came to the conclusion that browntone was in fact the faux bamboo finish. I think that Actionrod used 'bamboo finished' to describe their rods around that same time.
