Hey guys,

I‘d like to buy a spinning rod, but vintage glass is sometimes rare in Europe.

Are there any contemporary spinning rods, which are nice? Looking for lighter rods for trout and bass.

Thanks!

I have no idea what's available in Europe. Here in the US, most contemporary spinning rods are graphite although there are a few fiberglass ones still sold which tend to be very inexpensive. Unfortunately, if you ordered one from the US the shipping and taxes would far exceed the value of the rod. You might want to think about building your own from a fiberglass blank that you could buy from eBay or another supplier closer to home.

Mike McFarland's Ameriglass series includes spinning rod blanks available through Anglers Workshop. I've considered building one myself.

hate to say it, but modern graphite spin rods are much better for light trout spinning rods than any glass I've used. I still mostly fish old glass

but something like the Shimano Trout One UL is really a terrific rod.

The glass advantages in a fly rod are a more relaxed cast, better flex and 'fish feel', durability. None of these are strong advantages for a light spin rod.

As the guys say, my inclination would be to build a 4 or 5wt glass fly rod blank into a spin rod.

Now when you get into baitcasting finesse, there's a real niche for glass rods there. I think this guy, Angler Saito, is fishing a glass rod with his Abu 1500 and 2500s, to make perfectly astonishing casts -

But it's not clear if his custom Japanese rod is glass or not - my guess is it is but.

Have to disagree on some points, stouter graphite rods for bass fishing etc spooled with braid or nanofil are the best of the best for worm fishing and jigging.I can usually feel the bottom etc.UL and light spinning for using small jigs spinners lures glass is better for tossing light weight baits and using a low or 0 stretch line are quite sensitive and you get a cleaner hook set .Like flyfishing it has more to do with the size baits you are throwing than the fish.Glass has the added benefit of being more of a shock absorber for skinny lines or when you hook a big fish on light gear.I have a pile of exploded carbon UL rods.I've yet to break a glass rod.

I completely agree with this. The newer rods are far more sensitive. I still like using the old fiberglass rods too. A little adjusting is needed to switch back and forth.

In some of his vids, Saito is using a Anglo Paragon 411 fiberglass rod. That thing bends like a whip! His casting is mezmerising.
