I've had my ABU 5000 for a while and fished it on several different rods. Saw this Pflueger Summit Power Rod and thought the colors would match nicely with the 5000C. Am I wrong?

The first Lew's Speed Stik was patterned almost identical, and my uncle had it matched with his 5000.
He was proud of it and took it out to show us when it was new.

I always thought my bronze-frame Millionaire was a perfect match with Fenglas Lunkerstik 2000.

Some rods and reels were meant for each other.

This rod is super whippy, so I'm thinking about how I'll use it with the 3.8:1 gear ratio of the 5000. I won't be burning a buzz bait with it, that's for sure! :P

Lew's Speed Stik changed the world. Fenglas Lunkerstik followed suite.
I gave away a very nice, though very soft Silaflex to my friend Tony for his Abu spincast.

So it was good because it was good. LOL.

Kidding aside, I don't know what you mean by bass rod. Many bass anglers have a wide range of rods they use depending on the the location, technique, lure, etc.

Lew's set the benchmark that has been copied ever since, even in finesse rods, both for handling lures and handling fish.
If you compare it to a Heddon Pal or even a late 70s Silflex bass rod rated 3/8- to 3/4-oz, the older rods have tapers more like fly rods and especially soft tips you wish they didn't have.
Quite simply, it was good enough it made you say "what were they thinking?" about most everything before.
Lew's Speed Stiks also began as glass.
The best glass bass rod I've ever handled is Falcon glass.
Though have to give some credit to John Harrington for his glass para rod tapers coming out of WWII.

Thanks. I have four fiberglass casting rods from the 60s, including a Heddon Pal. All are supposedly medium power. But, the tip on all of them is very soft (some the entire rod is soft, far more than any current day medium rod). Not sure I'd be able to set the hook using a Senko with these rods. :lol

Do you know why rods of the era were built that way? Was it because bass fishing wasn't as big as it is now or became in the 70s?

what they were thinking had to be along the lines of protecting line test.

How things have changed. With people using 60 pound braid for bass, rod flex and drag are just about irrelevant. Watch the tournament anglers, they railroad fish in at 100 MPH. Reel gear ratios of 8:1 and 10:1 are becoming common. Of course, many amateur and weekend warriors copy the tourney boys. This kind of fishing has little appeal to me.
