the trick is to get the higher initial line speed smoothly - any jerk (third time derivative) put into a baitcaster cast is instantly translated into backlash.
Of course the ramp-up of the spool begins with jerk, from that energy, the spool wants to over-run, and this moment is exactly what centrifugal casting brakes are for.

You also took the correct approach on your reel, slashing LW inertia.

For sure. Smooooth casts are a must. Even more so as the lures get lighter. No sudden acceleration, especially at the beginning. Fortunately, I'm generally not going for long casts, but shorter ones with accuracy. Been throwing an 1/8 spinner in recent days. No great catches but some small Bass and an aggressive Bluegill!

in the old days on my Daiwa Millionaire 6H, throwing free-shrimp - a live shrimp on a bare hook with nothing else - I could double anyone's cast distance with a spiral cast.
No jerk at all in that cast, just steady acceleration, and also increases the effective rod length, because your bait is centrifugally straight out from the rod tip.
Not an easy cast when you're standing on the ground, but works great when you're standing above the water, like on a boat deck or corner of a dock.

Put the reel on a G. Loomis 7' med/light rod last week. Quite a bit different from the 5.5' light rod it was on. The casting distance increased. Since I mostly bank fish, I had to be more careful avoiding nearby trees and bushes! Pulled in a ton of crappie and several bass yesterday throwing a 1/4 oz Dark Sleeper. Lots of fun with the cold water bite cranking up.

good job

here's the rod I'm watching for, and may just spring me into the greenie 2500C I'm also watching.

I got the Loomis used for $60. I wasn't in the market but at that price it was impossible to pass up.

Nice rod. Not a bad price too, especially compared to some of the JDM stuff in this category. My local fishing shop sells Dobyns, but it's all big stuff for the typical LMB tournament style fishing (power fishing, mega-hooksets, etc).

Had a blast last weekend throwing the Berkley Power Bait Pogy Swim Shad. This little 1/8 oz lure pulled in dozens of crappie and enticed some bass too. Gave the new Loomis rod a good work out.

great outing - and pretty effective finesse fishing. ML rods are always fun, and a riot with big/strong fish.
Those are basically the same lures we use for night fishing at Arroyo - different colors, and we most often tie them up in tandems.

Tweeked the 2500C further today. Was able to cast 1/16 jigs fairly well. The 7' Loomis ML rod is probably not the best one for this task. I may put the 2500C on a light rod or one of the old super whippy fiberglass rods and see how much difference exists. Even a 1/32 oz jig will fall to the ground when releasing the spool. I didn't try casting this. It was dark outside. Maybe tomorrow ......

If you get on Plat's email list, you may be able to catch a Major Craft B-UL model when they have stock - they usually sell out the same day, but we have a 12-hour advantage here with Japan sleeping. They're about $100.
All BFS rod discussions on forums laud the Major Craft, and while everyone else anxiously awaits the new Dobyns BFS rod (which is built the same way - solid tip - like my Rockfish UL spinning rods).
