I used a spinning rod and caught some smallmouth bass last weekend. Nothing too big between 2 and 3.5#. This was the first time I used a spinning rod in probably 10 years. The rod was a 2 piece 6'6 3 power medium light seeker glass rod i built a while back.

Anyways I have a well used shimano stradic 2000 fg (the white one w/ wooden handle). The anti reverse doesn't always engage (the reel handle starts spinning backwards). I checked to make sure the lever was flipped to the correct side and the level is Loose, it will slide almost all the way out but catches on something so it won't fall out.

Does anyone know what part I need to fix the reel? I can't find the schematic from when I bought it, but i think I know where it is so eventually I will have the schematic.

I've caught a ton of fish on that reel including smallmouth to 6.5# so I really would prefer to fix that reel rather than buy a new one, it will get used once or twice a year.

I have a stradic 4000fg from the same era that seems to be in better shape.

Thanks for your help.

Thank you any idea what part it might be? The more I think about it the more I think i am sol. The reel is about 20 years old, probably hard to find spare parts.

if it's that old, it's not an FG, but an FD, and no, Shimano won't support anything older than an FK (2015)

It still may have a common part, check this older schematic to see if this fits.

If it is Bulldog's second schematic, that lever is held on by a screw and the lever needs to engage the reverse pawl, spring inside the reel might have came loose too.

If Shimano no longer supports, you still may be able to find a donor reel for the part, or the part outright on eBay.

First, you need to figure out exactly what is wrong, is something loose or broken? If one or more parts or broken, you have the correct schematic, make sure you accurately identify the parts. Try calling Mats Reel Repair, 715-337-2337, they are in Wisconsin and have a website - matsreelrepair.com
they don't sell online, you have to call.

I looked on their website, their Shimano parts listing doesn't go by model # or straight parts #, there are letter codes in front of the parts with no reference. But the parts beginning with code RD, the parts and descriptions match up with the list in the first schematic BD supplied you.

If you call them, they can't tell you what parts you need, they have a gazillion parts and don't know what they all go to, but they should be able to tell you if the letter identifier is correct for your reel, but it looks like parts are available for your reel. I believe they know what models go to which letter identifiers.

Apparently your reel was worth making in the first place. I talked to a repair shop years ago, the owner told me the majority of spinning reels coming from the orient were throwaways, no parts and the factory wouldn't service, if a reel broke under warranty you would just get a new one. I have no experience with reels, spinning or otherwise from the orient, so I don't know the truth of that, but it sounds like the reel means something to you, so I hope you can get it fixed. good luck

Tim

Thanks for all the replies. I'll try to figure out the part and give mats a call. At one time it was a good reel. I bought it when I was around 16 and it was over 100 bucks then. I think when I got it the only better shimano spinning reels sold in the states were the sustain and stella.

Right now the new (2019) Stradic is sold-out world wide.
The good Shimano available now is the 2020 Twin Power, which would make a great inshore reel, but even Japan prices (free Fed-Ex) are $400.

That's a lot for a reel that won't get much use. I was always partial to shimano. I'm not in a hurry to get a new one but I'll keep my eyes open.

I started with shimano ax 500/2000/4000 moved to spirex 500/2000/4000 then got stradic 2000/4000 (they dont make a stradic 500). I think they started shifting from 1000/2000/4000 to 1000/2500/3000/4000 etc. Sometime in early 2000s (after switched over to fly fishing).

My brother got a boat and is getting into fishing and is on very good smallmouth/muskie/northern pike/yellow pike water. It was a lot of fun to drift bait on lightish tackle. The same spots people took me to 30 years ago still produce similar fish. Looking forward to trailering his boat below the falls this fall to catch some salmon and steelhead.

As I said, that's the reel that has stock, and better prices on that reel from Japan than here.

novisor12 They DO have a 500 size in a new reel coming in Septemberish, it is supposed to supersede the Stradic. It's called the Vanford. VF500F is the model, I have the VF1000 on preorder, they have the desired worm gear drive!!! I struggled on which one to order between the 500 and the 1000, I ended up going with the 1000 and later saw a C2000 that I didn't see before, would liked to have ordered it.

Don't despair. Go to alantani.com. There are a bunch of spinner reel gurus on there. Just post your question and I'll bet you get some solid answers.

I have at least a half dozen of that era Stradic / Sustain. All still working like clocks.
