I don't do a whole lot of spin fishing (except at the beach). I typically use small (1/12 oz) Kastmasters in gold or chrome/blue for high lakes. I remove the treble hook, add another split ring (Spro stainless #2), and replace with a #12 Raven specialist hook, crushing the barb.

Have to try those Z-rays, have read quite the glowing reports elsewhere. I also have a few Thomas buoyants spoons in red/gold that supposedly are good.

I've played around with Panther Martins and Super Dupers a bit. I always remove the trebles and replace the hooks. For larger lures I use Gamakatsu siwash hooks, usually in #8 or 10.

A box of lures gets heavy though, so on a backpacking trip I try to strip it down to the essentials, which usually just boils down to a few kastmasters and such in a micro tackle Plano box.

more lure tinkering

Years ago (ok, it was more than a couple of decades) had success fishing this strange-looking rig drift-fishing the Pasture at S. Padre.

The cigar cork clicks when you snap it. The shrimp tail doubles over, just like an evading, kicking shrimp. It settles down head-first, just like a shrimp swimming with its legs.

Stazo flex jigs haven't been made since the '90s - I stocked up with a few back then. Josh (neumie) came through for me with a couple of 1/8 oz (the photo above with the 4" shrimp tail is 1/4 oz)

We have our favorite Arroyo City house and lighted dock reserved for four nights around the December new moon.
Maybe finger mullet, a few poecilids, the water should be black with tiny glass minnows, tiny shrimp - oh yeah, schoolie seatrout, redfish, and snook.
In the past, we've had great success fishing tiny live shrimp on a 4' leader below the 3" clicking cigar cork - and changing up with anything to imitate the glass minnows.

Japan shopping, I found these gorgeous Okiami (krill) lures made by Nikko.

Here's a glow Okiami rigged with the 1/8 oz Stazo, and a No. 7 Gami SH treble was the smallest that seemed to rig properly.

More Japan perusing found these Keake F-change head in 3 g down to sub-g weights.

I'll probably rig the single hook forward to keep the abdomen stiff and head-first lure settling, and clip the stinger hooks for fish velcro.

ok, this worked great

I found those on a Plat In Stock Now listing, and added them to a larger order - just lucky.
They are the only split ring tool I've found that works smaller than #3, plus they work larger than #3 better than more common pliers.
Image

Searching split ring on FishingShopKiwi brings up a page of tools, including the Smith tweezers and others similar.
Tedious website to navigate, but worth the efffort for lines, lures and reel tuning parts and low prices.
Never "preorder" - only buy items in stock.
Here's a good way to fill that cart - https://fishingshop.kiwi/category/Lures ... ead-Ryuki/
Some other recommendations, Toray Exthread is the best fluorocarbon line I've used in a range of sizes.
and YGK V12 is the toughest fluoro leader

Hmm, have to check those out. I've just been using these -

American Fishing Wire split ring pliers
https://www.fishusa.com/American-Fishin ... ing-Pliers

They work fine for me down to #2 Spro split rings.

Before I found the Smith tweezers, I was using Texas Tackle Factory on larger, and a jeweler's set on smaller - now both of those remain idle.

I’ve found that Rapala fishing pliers work very well, but I’ve only used them on larger saltwater-sized lures.

you're welcome.
they will send JP EMS post - a bit longer than 1 week - but expect a $24 post charge - one reason to fill a cart to make it worthwhile.

Found a pair of the Smith tweezers on ebay, shipped from Japan for about $21. Just got them in the mail today. Very nice, thanks for the recommendation.

cool
It's kind of a shame you have to go to Japan to find this tool - the niche really isn't filled on this side of the big pond.

Thanks guys...I just bought the last Smith one for $20...though I notice there are more available for a bit more...almost impossible to open the smallest split rings with your fingernail or swiss army blade...didn't know these existed.

I think this is tide pass cheating.

Duo Spearhead Quattro Ryuki 70.
I even upped the #8 trebles to #7 Gami velcro.
This lure is too big to be a single glass minnow, but can't imagine any that better imitates the bait ball.

Any recommendation for single hooks instead of treble hooks? I mostly fish with Kastmasters, but cannot stand the treble hooks.

Thanks!

Jason, the easiest to find here are going to be Owner - Owner is Cultiva of japan, though you'll find a bigger catalog shopping through Japan.

I have a whole range of them - Owner Single Replacement Hooks (you actually find them under treble hooks in the Owner catalog)
https://www.ownerhooks.com/product/sing ... -x-strong/

From Cultiva Japan I have different wire sizes, lightest and barbless, SBL-37M, moving up in wire weight, SBL-55M, and heavy wire S-75M

Size 14 to 18 trebles on 50 mm and smaller plugs don't do me a bit of good imitating glass minnows
but size 4 to 8 replacement singles are great

Image

Even better on spoons, though, I like Vanfook Stingers - but again, I'm going after inshore gamefish on freshwater trout lures to imitate winter glass minnows
I put the 4" Dog-X on top for size reference, and on bottom is a YoZuri 3/16-oz Pins minnow

Some other options:

- Gamakatsu Siwash (size 6, 8, 10) - the ones I have are open-eye; you can close the eye with a pair of pliers.

- Raven Specialist (size 12) - the eyes on these are pretty small, and only work with small split rings, like the Spro #2 (not the "power" version, those are too thick). I use these on 1/12 oz kastmasters.

replacing the trebles, particularly on the small rebels/pins minnows etc with 2 trebles, is good for you as well as for the fish.
More than once I've snagged myself on a loose treble while unhooking a frisky fish from the other treble..

Last year I really gave myself a good hooking.. Little Rebel minnow got stuck in float tube, used forceps at home to extract, planted 2 of the rear treble hooks deep in finger and thumb. With the 2 hooks in 2 appendages, none of the usual tricks worked, couldn't twitch it out with the loop of line or push through. Went down to workbench in basement and cut one off, pulled out, then pulled the other one. Shock ensued, dizzy and stumbling, went upstairs and briefly blacked out and fell. All from 2 little hooks..

Doug, I'm sure you were talking about replacing trebles with singles.
You can fish those little trout plugs in special regulation water - single hook, barbless - by removing the front hook and replacing the rear with a "plug" single - same with a spoon.

Ouch, that sounds extremely unpleasant ...

I forgot I had another brand of replacement single hooks. "Decoy Pluggin' Single" in size 8, pictured alongside some Gamakatsu Siwash hooks in size 8 and 10.

Image

Sorry about the glare in the photo. Found them on ebay a while back, while looking for some other spinning-related stuff. They appear to be made for saltwater, too.

The Decoy size 8 appears to be about the same gap as the Gamakatsu size 10 and a bit shorter. I have yet to put them on anything, but my first thought is 1/8 oz kastmasters ...

I agree with Bulldog.. JDM spoons are deadly and I use them when it’s too windy for my fly rod.

well, I obviously said something out of line … I put $65 worth of stuff in my cart that that would fit in a 4"x4"x4" box and leave room for packing, and the calculator tacked on a $43 shipping charge … so, still looking

Hi, not sure if this is the right place for this but was searching the forum and thought it was relevant. While I don’t do a lot of spinning these days I was recently invited out with a friend to spin and fly fish for sea trout on the coast (west coast of Scotland) Anyway on the day a specific lure was successful while many similar failed to catch. The lure was a vintage one I had picked up somewhere- probably in a job lot of tackle - but although distinctive I can find no information about it’s origins. Wondered if anyone had come across them or can shed any light ? The lure in question is a Leman Special Bar , 15 gr and is silver. It is possibly made of stainless steel and has retained well. T.I.A.

Another lure story. These lures came from a metal detectorist who had been searching old ponds and canals that had dried up. When I received them they were in need of TLC!
Most of them are old Colorado spoons. The bladed lure is a Veltic size 4 and the other is a quite rare Abu Koster in the old 18gr weight. It is the only me I have used so far and I caught a small sea trout on it recently. The Colorado spoons are very well made in copper and brass I think and have stood up well to being buried at the bottom of a pond for possibly 50 years! The Abu Garcia Koster of nowadays is made of an inferior metal that is awful for corrosion. The 70’s Swedish version being a better product by some distance.

Great lures - thanks for posting these, and especially happy they're being put to use.
