Cool colors on this surf caster. Learned to surf cast on a couple of vintage glass rods but never tied a 3 Jays.

Thanks, I agree, I really liked the colors too and I am a fan of black glass. My dad had a black Harnell rod he use for yellow fin, that looked like a king snake. I thought it was the coolest.

James Green added some additional coats of finish to the wraps of this rod and the label to preserve it a bit , since I intend on fishing it.

3 Jays was the early name for Fisher when they were in Los Angeles. Pretty excited to find this rod built in the city of my youth.

How long is the rod? What type of setup are you putting together?
I have a fenwick glass surf rod that is 12 feet long. Still have not mastered casting it. Need to use it for sturgeon in the delta here but have not gotten that far yet.

I always thought that 3 Jays was a sporting goods shop that had their rods done by fisher. Did not realize they were fisher.

It is 9'3", maybe that is too short to be considered a true surf rod. I am planning on using it in the surf ;). I have a large Penn spin reel that I am hoping to match it with.

From what I understand, Fisher sold a lot of Fisher brand blanks at retail to individuals and sold finished rods under the 3-Jays brand - named after John, Joe and Joe, Jr. Fisher.

That's actually a pretty typical and desirable glass surf rod length, and I yes, I think you nailed it about 3Jays.
In Harnell surf rods, the 9' to 10' rods are what everybody wants.
Russell, look up pendulum cast - that's the one to work on.
