Hello everyone,

I’m slowly wading into the fiberglass fly rod water and have recently picked up a mint Herter’s rod. The model number is RB6Y 1S6. I was wondering if anyone had any info on line weight for this rod? Thanks in advance for any information.

Nifty, Mbreen. And welcome. Herter's had good stuff, including many of its rods. Someone may be able to pull out a stash of Herter's catalogs and look that one right up. Mine were water-damaged many years ago and couldn't be salvaged, and I may not be the only one who can't quite remember the model designation schema. Help us out by giving descriptive detail: length and number of sections being most important. Odds are its a 6, 7, or 8 weight, but that will help until someone digs through a catalog stash. I wish I still had mine, but having some Herter's stuff is even better.

It’s a 2 piece and it’s 7’ it still had the plastic on the cork when I got it. Almost felt bad giving the guy $5 for it.

In my mind, 7' 'glass suggests a 6wt rod. With that kind of situation I usually just line it up with 3 or 5 different lines and try it. In this case, given the length, I'd try 6, 7, & 5 as a start; keeping in mind that one guy may like a heavier line on the same rod than another guy. These rods can handle a few different line sizes in the same way a hammer can drive different size nails. At one time the rods weren't even marked with line weights because the idea was that each angler would figure it out to suit himself. I've owned a rod marked 7wt that I liked much better as a 5wt and vice versa.

Should be a fun rod.

Herters made a really light weight little rod off of a St Croix blank, kinda clearish blank, red/pink wraps... if it is that on, is a 5wt.

We love pictures........

That could still make a competent 6 weight fly rod. I have a 7’ Herters RB6J20 spin blank a previous owner converted to an awesome 6 weight all around stream stalking rod.

There have been a lot of herter's and st croix fly rods showing up on the auction sites lately. They are awesome light little rods.I have a 6' 5wt herter that i really like.A friend just bought me another 6' st croix. He lives 60 miles away and was at a yard sale.Described it to me over the phone ,his phone wont take pics.He paid 5 bucks .I hope it is what he described,i know he knows what a fly rod is.

With that style reel seat it will be easy to test it out with fly lines to see what you think about the action of the rod, bear in mind that it will be a touch slower with the heavier guides on it. If you like the feel you can replace the guides with traditional snakes and a lighter tip top, or just fish it as is. I have a spin fly rod that I replaced the guides on (not a herter's) and I love it, except the grip is a little skinny. I also have a 7' Herter's kit built rod that I really enjoy, when I remember that I have it and actually take it out.

Might want to resell it as there are collectors of vintage spinning rods and put the proceeds into a fly rod.

As mentioned, It is a spinning rod and you would likely need to strip the guides and re-wrap it. Unless you're up for some DIY and investment in equipment, sell it or get a vintage spinning reel and lokk for another fly rod.

Awesome troutfisher68. Is that catalog from your original accumulation of Herter's? Or did you scavenge the box of slightly damp ones next to the steps? That might be where I forgot them. It had '64-'72 in it, but the '68 with "What to do when the Bomb Drops" was on top. In the knives section are the receipts for a spinning kit rod and a couple knives. It was a medium size box with some saddle hackles in the bottom. I don't want them back; I deserved to lose them, and I am glad somebody took better care of them than I did. I packed my Herter's guide's manual, bull moose cookbook, and fly-tying manual separately and I am pretty sure they are in the attic in a Herter's shoe box. They had great boots and shoes.

Herter's coffee! Man that takes me back. The hours I used to spend pouring over the Herter's catalogs.

Herter's Arabica coffee was the world's finest and the best in the world, plus there was none finer. You could get a good long day fishing off of it with just a Snicker's bar and maybe a peanut butter sandwich made correctly according to the Bull Cook recipe. The secret was a thick spread of butter on the bread. This helped satisfy "man's natural craving for grease." I forget if they sold pipe tobacco.

I still have a few Herter items, mostly fly tying gear. I wish my copy of George Herter's "How to Live with a Bitch" hadn't disappeared.

Funny you mention George Herter's "How to Live With a Bitch" book. I recently picked up a copy and it sat around in my reading pile for six months. Another book showed up (I don't know from where) that was a typical 1935 volume designed to help women be the perfect wife. Dess for dinner, meet hubby at the door with slippers and a pipe, defer to his every wish, etc. I jokingly sat it down in front of my wife and suggested she might find a few pointers to help her improve our relationship. After perusing the book for a minute or two, she turned and said, "It's too bad they don't have a book like this for men!" Like a lightning bolt, it struck me and I said, "as a matter of fact they do". I reached over and handed her my copy of "How to Live with a Bitch" ----- some people have no sense of humor

I must have been fishing and missed this thread.
That's a high-grade rod, and beautifully appointed.

whrlpool, you have a generous wife for you to have survived that suggestion.
