Last Fall I was fishing with my 5 ft Eagle Claw feather light and an Eagle Claw light reel (this reel was made in Italy and I have had is since I was 12) and with some of the fish I was catching in the lake at the cabin, I was out gunned...

So this year I have put togather a rig with a little more oomff...I didn't go crazy, the rod is a Fenwick FS70 and the reel is a Penn 712. Still looking for a 714 as that would be the perfect fit for the Fenwick, but for now this rig is ready to take on the bigger fish that laughed at my Eagle Claw rig.

Nice outfit. I had an FS70 many many years ago. I caught many Susquehanna smallies on it, with a Garcia-Mitchell 300.

I still fish the FS79 and Dam Quick reel that was my grandfather's retirement gift in 1973, and it still looks great. I caught a LOT of Coho on that sucker and one big Chum that made a horseshoe of it. Man, they are tough rods! I also just last night snagged an SF75-5 off ebay that I can't wait to put to work on bass this Summer... as a spinning rod.
I've no idea how it is that I still haven't tried a single Fenwick fly rod! :eek

yes, that's a nice bass rod or lake trolling rod (+ tailwater trout) and the reel would go nicely on a 7' or longer inshore rod.
The reel certainly doesn't look out of place on the rod, but 714 is still the most popular size, so you have to be on your toes looking for one.

Nice combo. I have fished a similar outfit for years. It is a Fenwick FS50 and a Penn 716. I use it for small Ozark streams and canoe float trips. Can handle decent bass and still fun to use catching Goggle-Eyes and sunfish.

I saw on on the auction site yesterday and thought about bidding...it sold last night for $79. Much more than I would have bid. I made the mistake of letting my grand daughters fish my Eagle Claw rod and reel last week...now they want open face spinning rigs. Looks like I will be buying more gear...

I had the Fenwick and the Penn out this weekend. Caught 8 brookie stockers and 2 rainbows. The brookies averaged 12 inches and the 2 bows were about 16 inches. They were no problem for the rig. I will have it as my main spinning rig this fall when the brookies are 15+ and we see bows in the 18 to 20 inch class.
