I paid 100 for 2 of them plus the abu euro version and thought it was a great deal.

photos are always better than opinions

and better add an L, because the reel above is offshore size

Maybe an ugly red Junior

I always loan fluoro, never braid, because borrowers inevitably get line behind even a skirted spool.
Then we go over manual bail again, this time it takes, and problem solved.

too many "classic" spinning reels won't manual bail - in fact, the only Mitchell that will is the 440 Ottomatic (in the masthead photo)

no worries, it was simply point and counter-point discussion.
There will always be experience-based exception to anyone's likes, which may require sneakers for forum treading, especially where dislikes are concerned.
E.g., anyone who has dealt with a broken Altex or Cargem bail spring may have no use for the reel.
Spinning reel remains the most complicated piece of fishing tackle ever devised, and the loads and stress involved were trial and error up to just the past decade of computer-aided design, which also finally added rotational balance to the function of these reels.

The big Sagarra, btw, remained in production from 1946 to 1995

Manual bail without modifications to make that feature? Yes, probably just those Mitchells. With modifications? Cut the bail and never trip it open, just using a finger to handle the line on or off the winder. My brother did this to a Mitchell 308 and is well documented (look at youtube).

Lausvik, you're Minimite is actually the size of the 700C, and also the Minispin. The Minimite is an update from the 700C and the Minispin. It features an anodized spool and two bearings. I have amassed over a hundred of these little buggers over the years. They are toylike and click like fine watches, the 500C has a single teflon oversized drag but the bigger 700C and it's sisters have a multi-stack drag. Lastly you can put an extra bearing in the 500C handle side case and make a carbon drag for it, and it's sweet.

Wow, glad to see this thread is still going! I think I've rounded out my collection. I found the Berkeley and Heddon UL reels, found another Hardy Altex, and just picked up a truly new-in-box Mitchell 308 with all the papers.

You'd all hate me if I told you what I paid for the Altex. Still on the hunt for an Orvis 51A. Otherwise, I think I have them all.

Altex under the radar is the best kind.

I own only two different models, unless a Zebco 830 qualifies.

The first was my first purchased reel, this 408 I bought with lawn cutting money that is still in the rotation used on my first purchased rod, a Eagle Claw Trailmaster M4TMUL:

The other are a couple of Orvis 50A I bought on the Bay for peanuts (no photos handy) in pristine condition. The older of the three I use often on my Orvis Superlight, Ultralight & Rocky Mountain bamboo spinning rods.

In reading further back on this thread, I noticed Joseph D. Bates name mentioned a few times when discussing books on spin fishing. Coincidentally, the oldest of my Superlights, a 6 footer built in 1958 belonged to Joe.

For all you Cardinal fans, a new Daysprout-made 100th Anniversary Cardinal 3 CDL was posted on BR forum show and tell
https://www.bassresource.com/bass-fishi ... nt=2855451
I'm not sure how they get 100th Anniversary, as Thommen Record (Cardinal ancestor) wasn't even being made then.

It might refer to the companys, ABU (AktieBolaget Urfabriken) that is, 100 year celebration last year, 1921-2021.

2021 was also the last year they published a printed catalogue, which feels a bit sad.
