9' daiwa glass surf rod with a new Abu Garcia Cardinal 704. Any thoughts on my set up. I found the rod unused in my dads garage a couple years ago.

Oh yes ... I'd fish that in a heartbeat. Put on a big 1.5 oz Acme Kastmaster and load the reel with 15lb mono and head to the Ohio R to pitch for hybrid stripers below the dams. Or tie on a 5/0 circle hook and nose hook a live 4" bluegill about 3' below a swivel with a 2 oz egg sinker and wait for a big blue cat to get hungry. Either way, your biceps will burn from keeping the wood to 'em! I love fly fishing - and I love bourbon - but life would be poor without all the other ways to catch fish and all the other ways to enjoy a cocktail.

Cornmuse good to hear fom you. I loaded the reel with 20 pound braid it'll hold more line that way. I plan on hitting the surf for stripers in few weeks. I wouldnt mind cat fishing like you said but they dont get to big here in massachusetts.

A Bay-Stater - no cats but lots of opportunity in the salt! I'd take that trade any day.

I can tell you that the largemouth bass pro's like glass for swimbaits. The softer action keeps them from pulling the lure from the fish on the hit. I'd consider getting some 5" long 1oz swim baits (paddle tail) and fishing those anywhere that baitfish are pounded against rocks or braided currents. It could be fun. Not a bad choice to put out a bottom bait, either. Even today I like to take one day a year and get back to basics by fishing bait. If you haven't done it in a while, give it a go.

Cornmuse i have a 7'11" bass pro shop extreme baitcasting rod for swimbait fishing. I throw the big boys with it huddleston weedless swimbaits , california swimbabes, matts lures swimbaits , and river2sea s-waver. check out there web sites youll be impressed. I almost got into bass tournements then i caught my first fish on a fly rod. I was hooked. I always preferred glass for crankbaits and some heavy duty graphite for swimbaits.
