I’m thinking about building a 4wt in the 8-8.5’ range and wanted to toss a poll out there for my top 5 contenders. For this rod, I’m looking for a moderate, smooth action that loads well with a standard WF4 or DT4 line. I’ll be throwing dry droppers and small streamers 95% of the time with this one.

You may question why I didn’t include a Steffen 8’ 3/4 - I have a Steffen 7’6” 3/4 and while it’s one of my favorites, I’d like to diversify a bit. I’d love to hear your thoughts on these blanks, as I’ve never wiggled any of them.

Larry Kenney has an 8’2” 4wt

Edit: sorry, just realized this was a poll. Guess which one I voted for : )

I have both the CTS and the Kenney 824. Both excellent, slight preference to the Kenney for casting and line control. Both these rods are on the light side for dry/dropper or small streamers. At that length, I would be thinking about a 5wt - but not absolutely.

Will put in a vote for the Kenney.

I really like my McFarland 804. I’ve never had an 8’ 4 wgt and this is a lot of fun. I’ve had glass 4 wgts from 6’6” to 7’6” but this 8’ is so much fun on Smallies and panfish. Especially panfish. I use Rio Trout 4 WF. I know it’s trout line but these creeks aren’t exactly warm and that line has seem better days.

Thanks for all the useful info and voting in the poll. My search for a 4wt took an unexpected turn last night when I found a Living-ston Headwaters 8’ 4wt on eBay. I’ve been interested in the Headwaters rods since Dusty introduced them a few years ago, but I didn’t expect to find a blank. I’ll post some pictures of the build and review the rod before long.
