Just won a Kabuto 764-3 on that big auction site.

What type of glass does Kabuto use?

When you receive the rod, send Kab a PM or email with the model number etc. and ask him. Nobody else will have information that is more accurate.

At this point does it really matter? You just bought a very nice rod. Great fly rods have been made with E-glass, S-glass, T-glass, S2-glass, etc. A good designer makes the best of their preferred material.

Echo that x 10 Tom , as stated , you have the great fortune of just becoming the owner of one of the top most finely crafted fly rods in the industry , and congratulations are sincerely in order with that , my question would be more centered towards inquiring with maybe what line this new rod performs best with , many here can reccomend from experience which brand/taper to try that have already dialed in , Kabuto rods can be tricky for some ? Enjoy your purchase …

No idea what type of glass Kab uses on his blanks but congratulations on getting a great smooth casting progressive fly rod. Unlike the 7033 and 8053 that some like to line with a heavier line weight, I really like using a true to weight 4dt on my 7643. I use both the 406 dt4 and the classic Cortland peach 444 in 4dt.

Congrats on that score! Great question looking forward to the answer … I’ve been bitten by the Japanese glass bug myself. My bet it is Uniglass.

I’m certainly looking forward to receiving it.

Here’s Kab’s response to my inquiry:

“The 7643 (all of our fiberglass rod ) is made from E-glass.

My recommendation is the Cortland classic "peach" both DT & WF.
But there are many good lines in the market.
I recommend you do not choose light lines and long front taper lines.”

So there you have it. I’ll try a Cortland 4DT, 406WF5, 406DT4 when it arrives and report back.
