Got a marketing email today from Redington, looks like they have updated the Butter Stick. The main change appears to be now in a 4 piece configuration.

I had the original version 476-3, it was just so-so for me, ended up moved it along.

Anyways thought I'd share the news for those looking for a 4 piece rod, below are the current models listed on the web site.

370
476
580

Just saw a picture on the 'gram. The color seems to have gone back to yellow, with a different style font.

I have one of the second generation white 6wt's that I like for spring and summer warm water fishing. The old models look like they are being closed out at some places.

Very interesting. Im a stickler for section length. Many places I fish are a long hike, most are atleast a good car ride. Rods that pack like broom handles are a hard sell for me (and that means I miss out on a lot of great glass).

Its nice to see manufacturers (Orvis, Redington, Echo, etc) offering rods in packable section lengths.

Those new ones look a lot like the Echo River Glass and Beans Pocketwater rods.

Wonder if the Gen 2 Buttersticks will be drastically reduced in price? Wonder also how these new ones compare to the new LL Bean Pocket Water rods?

I would expect to see some second-generation models showing up on places like Sierra Trading Post. Reelflyrod has some on sale, too. Look around ...

Interesting cosmetic change, now back to traditional style colour while ORVIS moved to a creepy paint for the new Superfine Glass.
I definitely didn't like the two-tone blank.

The Redington configuration is the same as LLBean and Echo rods, but the parts look like they're different makers. All of these makers do seem to be settling on downlocking reel seats.

On pricing, for what it's worth, Orvis didn't drop their prices of the (now old) SFG rods at all when they moved to their new design. That may be because they have better control over supply than other makers, who typically do let their rod prices drop to close-out levels when they move to a new generation.

I ordered the 4wt. It should be here Friday.

If the wind calms down in the next couple of weeks, I may do a head to head comparison with the Butterstick and a Scott F Series 7'2" 4wt and my Barclay 7'9" GP which I like best with a DT4.

Thanks to Odanata above. I never knew of sierra trading post before, but the deals are great. Maybe I was living under a rock. Anyway... I'm not necessarily interested, but there is basically ever 2nd gen butter stick available on the site.

Yep thanks Odanata … that $149 price on Sierra Trading Post is what looks like a great deal on this rod. From reviews I’ve read the v2 is more along the lines of a great $149 rod but a poor $279 if that makes sense. I need a solid 4wt rod that doesn’t break the bank …

I bit the bullet and picked up the 7’6 4wt from Sierra and paired it with a Redington Zero reel. Throws both the Cortland Peach DT 4wt and Rio Mainstream DT 4wt very nicely. Effortless casts out to 40 ft for me and handles size 18 BWOs and size 10 Conehead wooly buggers with aplomb. The blank reminds me of the old San Diego Padres uniforms from the 70s which is cool. The avocado Zero reel is an eye sore but looks very 70s. It is a very slow action but if you let the rod do the work it is “buttery” smooth. Great rod for $149 and was bent in half on a few Maine bass today but it handles them well and I landed all of them.

Can't always edit or delete a thread conveniently once it has developed from a well-intentioned post. Nevertheless, a reminder that internet sales are available to all without repetition here. It's not our purpose to be a market monitor or sales promotor, and such info is soon out-of-date. viewtopic.php?f=32&t=17062
