Okay,

After buying another phillipson (casts great, much better than my still loved Fenwick rods), any suggestions? The metal ferrule makes me nervous about saltwater over the long term.

It would be 8 or 8’6” 8 weight.

Well there will be plenty of good suggestions, but the metal ferrule isn't something to be concerned about. Worst-case scenario if carelessly maintained or you don't want to bother, very easy to replace.

The ferrule is nickel silver, and as long as you disassemble and rinse/clean the rod, shouldn't be a problem.

If you go back to cane SW boat rods, only plated brass ferrules cracked, and part of that was biological rot of the cane.

On topic, I'd keep buying Phillipson, but there are newer glass rods around 8' aimed for the salt.

How about a Phillipson with a glass ferrule? They exist. Check out the Phillipson Catalog thread and look at the 1969, 1971, and 1974 catalogs.

There was a really nice Epoxite EF80S 8-wt salt blank offered - brown blank with spigot ferrule.
