Looking at buying a used Steffen Brothers 7'9" 3/4 weight. Its actually a Steffan Blank that is put together by George Minculete at Tightloopflyrods. Any idea on:

1. a fair price to pay?

2. How would this compare to my Thomas and Thomas Heritage 7'6" 3 weight?

Thanks in advance

I had an 8' 3-4 built by Mark McKellip, and I considered it a straight 4 weight, at least for me.
One of the rods I regret selling (under some financial duress unfortunately) but such is life.
Not sure the 7'9" acts similarly as have no experience with that taper.

Price, subjective, but builder does have good reputation for doing great work. It would depend most on overall condition of rod.
I owned a 7-9 3/4 3pc. My opinion, it was a dandy 3wt when it had a DT3 on it. I did fish it with a DT4, to me that line overloaded it with more than 30ft out. As with any Steffen, they all are great casting rods. I still own a 7-9 4/5, that to me is a solid 4wt.

I have a 7’9” Steffen built by Steffen. It’s about as 4wt as 4wt can get. It’s a bit faster than my 8’0” 3/4. At 1-40ft of fly line out, I’d put a 4wt line on both.

I had a 7'9 3/4 Steffen built by Gypsy so if the taper has ever been tweaked by Steffen over the years it's the earliest iteration. I thought it was a better 3 than 4 but an excellent rod either way.

Always difficult to compare one blank/rod to another. Do you want them to be similar or different? Especially with glass they all have less 'bandwidth' because they are all in the more delicate action range unlike for instance graphite. You already have a (nice) 7.5ft #3. What do you expect from 3-4 inch longer length?

George is one of the best rod builders around, so the workmanship is top notch.

the 7'9" 3/4 is probably my favorite fly rod. it works great with a 3wt DT and i do like it with a 4wt also. it is a very intuitive fly rod and will put a fly where your looking without even thinking about it. just nicely accurate. I have a 8' 3/4 and don't really care for it much. its slower and does not recover as well as the 7'9" but thats getting off subject a bit. i would buy that rod, i have lots of steffens and that one is one of my favorite.
