Totally random question. Why do some rods seem to have a bit or foam (or whatever) at the top of sections where they connect to other sections and some not?

I thought it was to protect the walls of the male ends from cracking or breaking. All my graphite rods are like this and a few of my glass rods. One of the glass rods does not have anything in the ends, though.

Depends mainly on who rolled the blank. Some manufacturers will “plug” the male ends with material such as Silicone or a flexible Epoxy. I’ve seen it done on both high end blanks and those that are not, and it goes the other way.

While there are mixed opinions on whether to install a “plug” on a blank without one in the male ends, it’s not a bad idea or detrimental to the blank as long as you use something that has a bit of flex to it.
