My ff807 is vexing me a bit. It seems to want more line than the 7wt I have on it.Is it more of a heavy 7 to 8 wt?

It gets more favorable comments regarding an 8wt line than a 6wt, I think, although I’ve thought it handled a 6wt Mastery Bass Bug line fine. I usually fish mine with a DT7, FWIW.

Mine is best with DT7F, I think. But, it doesn't suit me as well as the older FF80 7-8 with the same lines whether in #6, #7, #8, etc. It takes getting used to, perhaps.

definitely a 7wt, have fished it with a 6 DT for longer casting, never felt the need of an 8wt ?
What is the current line you are using ?

It will handle an 8wt just fine, but for me it was a 7. Just a matter of personal taste, I think. I really liked the 7wt Rio Smallmouth line on mine, which I think is a little heavy to standard.

Mine really likes a Rio Gold WF7F - need to try the Rio SM Bass line brockton mentions.

I use a SA WF 7 on mine and it cast very well.

Hey thanks for the input. I managed to knock a ring out on it but have found it to be a great woolly bugger in the wind trout rod lately.

I ended up with a 7wt bass bug taper which it loves.

I mostly cast a Scientific Anglers Titan WF7F on mine. Seems just right. Great rod!

I find the 807 an amazing 8wt.

One more chance-

So I’ve tried a few lines on my 807, and love none yet. Last night was too cold to try so I took the other rods out of the trunk, (ff756, phillipson mf66) and rigged the 807 for a few days of windy action with my go to cold water fly.

I can’t tell if my lack of love for this rod is due to the rod, line or my inadequate casting (I have no trouble with the 756). I have two different lines ready.

For a week, I am fishing with nothing else. If I cannot figure out, it is for sale.

You decided you didn’t like the 7wt bass bug taper after all? I thought that would have been right up its alley, and a good pond match.
But sure, if it’s not going to fish the way you want, may as well try the next one.
What was it you wanted it to do that it’s not? I’ve mostly used mine in rivers.

I used a regular 7wt wf line on a lighter, smaller reel than the one holding the bass taper. Instant improvement was noticeable, so the heavy reel may have been part of the problem.

After casting for 20 minutes, I noticed that this a much slower taper than the graphite-like f756. Slowing down helped, allowing the positive attributes to emerge.

I was stuck at home yesterday while my car was in the shop. I got out my FF807 and did some lawn casting. To me, it's a nice casting rod with the Titan 7wt, which I thought of as "7.5wt". Well, after checking the specifications on the Scientific Anglers website, they say the first 30' of a Titan WF7F weighs 240 grains. That puts it squarely on the AFFTA target weight for a 9wt line!

That is the new numbering system, just put any number you want on the label. I read about one "7wt" line not too long ago that was in the 12wt category by 30' mass.

I ended up buying an ff80 from a member here, and it is more in line with what I hoped the ff807 would be. It casts big stuff, small stuff and is lighter in hand.

I picked up an 807 here a few tears ago.
I tried a couple of lines and finally settled on a SA 7 wt. Magnum. Box says it’s 1/2 a line wt heavier. So far it works.

So, I have left this thread alone for a few days, and have refused to give up on the 807. For the first time, I tried a sink tip line, (Rio) 7 wt. After hours of practice I can cast the entire line with a small clouser in calm conditions. In even better news, the rod and same line will cast a 10” fly 30-40 feet in good conditions.

I now think the initial problems had to do with too heavy a reel, a poorly constructed leader, and me. I have to work a bit harder at timing forward and back casts than I do with a shorter rod. Once I figured that out, I could see why the ff807 is considered such a good rod.

I have the FF857 and it's a DT-7 or WF-8
A really nice casting rod just slow down on you strokes.

Ok just won one on the auction site … R106378 which I think means it was manufactured in 1977-78? As much as I have heard you folks sing the praises of this particular rod I had to add a Fenwick to my vintage glass Arsenal … now my beloved Eagle Claws have some new company …. I’m thinking I’ll go with a 406 7WT DT … I’ll be primarily throwing size 2-10 bass flies in ponds …

Thanks Upstream … I’m thinking a Martin MG-10 or Medalist 1495 to balance it out …
