I fished a lot of smaller streams last year with my then- new Steffen 7'3" 2/3 and it was great for smaller flies and lower water conditions. Sometimes I felt like i could have used a little heavier set up for heavier flies or deeper water.

looking to build up a 4/5 wt around 7' or there abouts. Any one know of a nicer blank in this size?

thanks

Mike McFarland sells blanks and has a 7' Spruce Creek 5wt. 3 piece. - rod at least. I am assuming he will sell the blank.

Check out some earlier posts regarding the Haldin 7ft 5wt. Sounded like a nice blank.

Not a blank but a vintage Fenwick FF70, FF 70-4, or FF705 are all excellent rods even by the standards of modern glass. At a big savings over building out a blank.

Thanks for the replies folks, but I got lucky - I found my godfathers old Shakespeare wonderrod FY-920 which is a 7' that can use a 5 wt line. It looks to be in very good shape. I cast it in the snow with an old peach DT5F and it does just fine out to 30'. Looks like i won't need to build one up after all!

Very cool! A size you needed and personal history too. Doesn’t get any better.

Those 7ft Wonderrods are fine casting vintage fly rods. Good score made even better being a family piece.

My friend caught his first trout on a 7' Wonder rod. Such a great rod.

you know - i caught the first trout (sort of ) that i can recall on a wonderrod - I was about 10 and I recall my dad holding my hand with the rod and showing me how to pull a streamer across twitching it and we did get a trout to bite - it was a red and white marabou streamer and i still have that rod and still fish red and white marabou streamers. It is a 1280 T model - all of the labels are worn off, the grip is in terrible shape and i have re-wrapped it at least twice. It is quite a noodle but has a lot of good memories.

Ohhh, Those 7ft Shakespeare FY's are super - whether it be with a beadhead streamer or a dry - congrats !!

If you want to protect the decal and script, use a water based acrylic or etc, DON'T use anything spirit based or an epoxy covering that is thinned with alcohol or other volatile. The script is the most sensitive.
