Could someone please list the 8’3”-longer 5 wght glass available by current builders. I am good on those by Mike McFarland, just that only others I can think of are Dusty’s 8’6” or is 8’9”, Chris ‘s 8’3” and a Kenney’s 8’3”. Thanks
Input and comments would be appreciated, and PM’s if more appropriate are fine. Thanks All!

Merry Christmas.

Steffen makes an 8'6" 5/6
I cast ZeppoVA's 4pc (they don't make that model any more) built by Matt Leiderman. It is a rod to drool over (both for fishing and to look at).

Morgan has an 8'6" 5wt.

There are quite a few 8footers out there, but as you notice, there aren't that many rods over 8ft.

Are you looking for another rod? I thought you were set for life.

Merry Xmas Carl and Dusty, the truth is Carl I am in process of organizing and thinning the collection . A lot of unfished great rods will be available , but am seriously looking into Hilton Head Island as landing port post 41 years career. Haven’t seen too many Brookies there yet. My thoughts are keeping the best of the best of respective builders. I traded my only 8’3” length to Duff a few years ago.
Dusty please put me in your list when available.

I have been loving my 9’ 3wt ********* YS glass composite from Dusty. It throws a 3wt or 4 wt line really well, and I even use a 5 with it for heavier flies. That length and flexibility is good for me, and is great for warm water. It comes in a five, and I am working on getting a 6wt in the same length. After hearing so many folks recommend them, I was glad to see they lived up to the hype. I will def be checking out some Western Glass as well.

I am definitely going to continue the YS Glass. In fact I'm working on 4pc models in 4wts to 8wts.

I love the Steffen 8'6" 5/6 that I built several years ago. It's a 6 for me, others may view it as a 5, although I think a lot of people think Steffen's fish nicely with the higher of their 2 rated line weights

Bob Hallowell has a 8'1" 5wt rod. One of the best 5wts I own. Just shy of your length requirement though.

I own a ********* western glass 4 piece, and a James Green semi para too in the +8' 3" 5wt category and would recommend them as well, but my vote is for the Hallowell.

Absolutely agreed with above statement. Bob ‘s 8’1” 5 wght is incredible. You are correct in your assessment, this rod is extremely versatile and his craftsmanship is among the best builders out there.

Bob, do you want to try to figure out a 4pc that has the action of that 5wt?

I have an 8’3” 5wt 5-piece built on a James Green Explorer blank. I think that’s about the max length that blank can be set up as. See:

Yo JAS - I have a wonderful 8'6" 5wt by Bill Harms. It's a taper he worked up with Mike McFarland and is a very versatile stick. http://www.classicflyfisherman.com/HARM ... GLASS.html

I think if you converse with Dusty , he will be able to craft something in line with what you’re looking for , he’s been messin around with some oddball stuff for me , and now that he’s at capacity to really start inventing , the possibilities may well be “off the charts” , besides the fact that you may very well end up with a “one of” creation for yourself (?) definitely worth a few back & forths ???
