Can be 7 to 7.5ft. Can be modern or vintage but not a 6wt labeled as a 5wt - if you know what I mean. A 3 piece 7'6" rod is 31.5" so I know that won't work. I used to own an FF70-4 but that was a 6wt IMO although my FF70 two piece is a true 5wt. I'm guessing a modern maker offers such a beast. I just thought of the Cabela's CGR 570-3. Any others??

I have a FF75-4 that is labeled 5-6 weight and I like it as a 5wt. Awesome rod!

Yes FF 75-4 is nice with a 5wt and so is the 756-4, the former is certainly a 5, the latter is a faster 5 but again more a 5 than a 6. Fenwicks do vary a fair bit from rod to rod so it's worth testing a particular rod before buying.

The 7'11" Ijuin Yomogi 4 piece is a deep flexing semi parabolic progressive 5wt (can be underlined with a 4).

I too have an FF75-4 and mine is a 6wt. It can be fished at longer distances with a heavy 5wt line but doesn't load at shorter distances with that line. Either this model varies from rod to rod or peoples perceptions do.

It's both. Any brand or model of rod will vary some due to individual lay up and variances within the materials. But every caster also varies in height, weight, arm length, hand size and type of stroke- the only way to know if any rod will suit you personally is to try it on.

Tiemco Fenwick “79.5” fits the bill...

whoops...
I just realized you stated 7’6” as a max length. Sorry...

that might be a tough one to find. Modern makers dont reallly make short 5wts...

McFarland probably could accomodate you.

Paddock is the last I know of to make a good (great! actually) short 5wt. But it was a 2pc.

Steffen makes a #4/5 taper, but I dont think shorter than 7’6”.

Bamboo might actually be easier to find in this configuration...

You might want to look at some of the modern rods labeled a 3 or 4.

Maybe a New Fenglass 704, some on here prefer it as a five.

If you could go to 7’9”, and 5 pieces, Chris Barclay’s 5-piece General Practioner is a terrific 5 wt.

You could try a vintage 7’ 2-piece 5 wt, cut each piece, and get spigots installed to make a 4-piece. I'd probably do as cheap as I could find and see how I liked the before and after before trying it with a quality rod.

I’m pretty much in the same boat on my FF70-4, and the FF756-4, as being more 6 than 5 weights, certainly in close. I guess if you went through 20 of them, you might hit one you liked as a 5. But checking out the CGR would be quicker and cheaper than the other options.

Thanks for the suggestions guys - I had forgotten I posted this request. Turns out I ordered a Kabuto 765 blank from Kab and built it out. A very nice taper and an honest progressive medium fast 5wt - very much like his 764 but better with a 5wt line.

Glad to hear it. And I need to make sure I look at the date of original posts like this before responding.

I know I’m really late to the game on this one, but I think there was actually a lot of variation in the Fenwick 2 digit models in particular. You just hear too many conflicting reports on them-too much to entirely account for casting skill/variation. I have an FF70 that I bought recently from the for sale page, and it is definitely a 4/5 with modern lines. It would feel ridiculous with a modern 6w line (even though it is one of the models marked 5/6).
