I have always been a fan of his attention to detail and design of his rods especially his 70P.I ordered the GP and was wondering if anyone has this rod and how it fishes because I can't find anything on this forum........Thanks Aurelio

I'm keen to hear your thoughts Aurelio. I think my next purchase will be a 7'6" - 7'9" 4 weight, and I'm looking at 5-pieces. Interested to see how you think it compares with your Steffen.

I have a 2 piece GP and fish it with a 4 on the Gallatin in Montana. This 7'9" rod is like a Jack Russell Terrier...it thinks it's larger (longer) than it is and fishes (casts, mends, strikes and fights fish) like I'd expect from a longer rod.

Chris had the 5 pc, at last year’s Carolina Conclave, and I liked it a lot. Some comments here

And I think there might have been a couple of other threads that included mentions of it in the same time frame.

Probably a good choice to handle that as well as being really pleasurable with lighter fare.

Another rod to look at is a Steffen 8' 5/6wt 3 pc glass rod. It is not a 4 or 5pc rod, but it is awesome!

I fished the GP and my 5pc. 3/4 today and the difference is the GP has a little more heft in the front end.The GP was a little smoother and softer than the Steffen.I was using a 4wt. Dt. and it did everything as good as the Steffen with a little less effort and more feel very, very, nice rod........Aurelio

I got my GP 5pc. Back from Chris a couple of days ago with 2 new tips and a reshaped handle because the ritz felt a little weird.Anyway I need to revise my review.I fished it hard yesterday and it balanced perfectly with a EC 11 reel and it really liked the SA XPS 5wt. DT line. The rod has a stiffer tip and mid section than my Steffen 3/4 but you don't notice fishing but I was able to turn the bigger fish on a dime.I had a 5/6 6 PC. Steffen once and I like this more.I fished a smaller stream that had some brush so I was able to do some bow and arrow casting and with the stronger tip it was a 7 out of 10 but I did not get this rod for small streams. Were the stream opened up it rolled cast beautifully and was a joy with fish on very smooth and not bouncy. The GP will be my go to rod for the Rio and Conejos.Thank's Chris and thank you Mike,I could not keep the fish off that Red Amy's Ant yesterday

Agree this is a very nice rod. An excellent all-rounder for those who don't need or want the extra length, or perhaps have a slightly more aggressive casting stroke where the shorter length is an asset. Also makes a perfect "truck rod" to have with you at all times "just in case". Obviously, great for travel. In my hands, action is progressive with the butt softened just the tiniest bit to smooth out power transfer from grip to tip and to aid with roll casting. Tempo is medium leaning towards medium fast. Excellent build qualities from Mr. Barclay.
