What's the progression of lines,
with regard to WF "casting weight" relative to DT?

For example is this the right progression?:
4DT, 4WF, 5DT, 5WF, 6DT, 6WF

or is it this?
4WF, 4DT, 5WF, 5DT, 6WF, 6DT

I can neve seem to remember ... Image

The later - if a rod is comfortable with a DT5, it will want a WF6.

For the first 30' there "should" be no difference between the two - a WF5 and DT 5 *should* be the same. That statement needs to be qualified with the need that both lines share the same taper, though. That's seldom the case in practice. With all the new tapers available - bass bug, salt water, bonefish, redfish, pike, trout, steelhead, etc..- the only thing indicated by the line size is the weight in grains of the first 30 feet.

Most manufacturers rate a rod for a DT line. If Scott suggests a rod is a #6, they are probably referring to a dt6. Orvis is the opposite - they have rated all their rods (since the beginning of the grapite era at least) for wf lines. An Orvis graphite rated for a #5 wants a WF5 or a DT4

Thanks, J!

I appreciate the response.
This stems from me planning to try that Cortland intermediate.
I fish a Peach DT5, now;
so go with the WF5 intermediate for the closest "feel"?

I wasn't sure if it would be the WF5 or the WF6 ...

Move up to the WF 6 if you're currently using a DT5. I edited my original post, I noticed I had a typo.

ok, Joe.

That's what I thought was the case,
just looking for confirmation.

I'll try that #6 and see how I like it ...
(pity, there's a few #5's on evilbaY right now. I'll have to be patient ... )
