This may have been covered in a previous thread but can anyone compare the action, line weight, and speed of these two versions of the 686? Thanks!

Have owned both and prefer the 4pc as I feel it’s ever so slightly quicker otherwise they felt identical...they were both the older CTS versions...I still have the 4pc and fish it all the time.

YMMV on this. I think the 3 piece is softer then the 4 piece and fit my fishing style better.

How dramatic was the difference? I saw on another thread where you called it a "different creature." Just curious what you meant by that.

I own the three piece version and have cast the older 4 piece version. If I remember right the four piece was just a touch faster to me. Could have been the line, caster, etc. I have not tried the latest iteration of that rod. I know the blanks are now rolled in Korea, but the quality looks very nice. If you are looking for a more trouty 6wt I would turn to Dusty's ********* Western Glass 6wt.

Glacier,

I have both the older 3 piece and the last version of the 4 piece. I have not handled the newer FastGlass II rods, so don't attribute this to that line. As for the older 3 piece vs the 4 piece, I find the 4 piece to be noticeably stiffer. I use two lines on these, mostly, a sci-angler shooting head sink tip and a heavy full sinker. On the 3 piece, these lines give her a deep and smooth flex when casting it throws the line very gracefully after some short false casts and a double haul. With the 4 piece, the feeling is much stiffer and the flex is no so much, but although it does feel that way, the 4 piece LAUNCHES both those lines several yards farther.

Thanks for the insights. I'm curious to hear others' impressions as well.

I have a buddy who is currently building a 686 on the new blanks, so once he's done, I should be able to compare it side-by-side with my previous generation (CTS-rolled) four-piece. It will probably be a while before he's done though.

magicmike nailed it. The three piece is more “trouty”. I like that description.

I was thinking there are 2 versions of the 686 and had forgotten that I read that production is now in Korea. The current rods look like they've got some texture so haven't been sanded as much as the previous ones. So most likely they're going to be fairly different than either of the first two. For $300+ for the blank, I think I'll wait to hear some feedback on the new one.
