Needless to say no shortage of these length glass rods in my collection, especially if one includes the 7’10” - 8’1” range as well. But reading reviews, searching their web site has tweaked an interest especially since this summer was a bust fishing wise due to rain. Welcome opinions, comparisons to the more utilized Mcfarland’s, Steffen’s, etc. Thanjs

I found that rod too stiff...and yep, here too, rain, rain, go away!

I have an Epic 580 that I built, and I really like it. It's definitely fast, but I wouldn't call it stiff. (Then again, I tend toward faster glass rods and medium graphite rods). The Epic 476 has a notably stiffer butt section (comparable relative to a 4-weight) than the 580. If I'm casting in close--say within 15-20 feet, especially with a small dry, it's not my favorite rod (but it's not bad at all in that regard).

To me, it really shines when I'm casting in the 20-60 foot range. The fly choice really doesn't matter to me, once I get out past 20 feet. I had a great night this summer casting a medium-size klinkhåmmer to rising cutthroat in a mild (sometimes more) breeze. That said, casting hoppers or a dry-dropper rig are probably my favorite type of fishing with this rod. It's crisp and feels lively and a lot of fun in my hands. Playing fish on it is really fun. It's got a lot of flex, but it can also muscle some large ones in.

I think of it as a very Western rod, and I like it on our medium-sized and larger streams. The only real competition it has in my quiver is the ********* 895, which is another excellent tool, but much longer and with a slightly different set of strengths.

First, I don't know how different the new blanks are from the old blanks. I haven't cast any of the Fastglass 2 blanks, just the first generation. I cast a 580 and found it good as a do it all 8' 5wt rod. Faster than many, but not as fast as the Orvis. The 480 is a lot slower with more soul.

Knowing your collection, it's not something I would jump at, unless you want a colorful rod.

I've got an original 3 piece, it is very similar in casting feel to a friends 8' 4 wt 3 piece Steffen. I like it a lot. I like it a lot for glass on the faster side.

I built up a 580-3 a few years ago and really like the action. For me it's a good do-it-all rod - I can't categorize it as better for dries vs nymphs vs streamers etc., it just does them all well. I pull it out when I'm not sure what the day will bring. I would categorize it as medium fast. Mine is a gen 1 rod, of course.

Do not forget to check out ********* Rod Co. He has an 8' 5wt that is getting rave reviews. I own his 8'9" 5wt western glass rod and its a tailwater fishing machine.

still have the Kenney 5wt?

probably, I'd be asking for comparisons to that.
Maybe they are closer to eachother than you think.

I've got the 580 built for saltwater and handles a lot of big fish really well, even uplining to a 7wt line.

I built out an Epic 580 a few years ago and found it extremely fast and stiff - hated it. Maybe it was just an abnormal example but I don't know since I've not had the opportunity to cast another. I remember thinking at the time that if I wanted a rod this fast, I'd choose graphite. It had no feel at all until I had a fair amount of line out and even that was difficult because it wouldn't load enough at short distance to even pull line out of the rod. It was hard to believe it was in the same series as the 480, which is an outstanding glass rod, IMO.

Seems like the original mid weight Epics are in two categories- the 476 and 580 are faster, while the 480 and 686 bend deeper. I expect it’s a deliberate design choice.

Curious if anyone who thought this rod was too fast tried it with a 6 weight. I'm looking to build a 8 foot 5/6 weight, in at least 4 pieces for travel, and this is one I've thought of. I'm looking for that travel, do-anything rod, so the ability to cast both 5 and 6 weights would appeal to me. There was one reference to uplining to a 7, but curious how it casts as a 6 weight compared to some of the other great 6 weights out there (unfortunately for the purposes of what I'm looking for, mostly in 3 pieces...)

The 805 is very capable with a 6wt. It's a great allrounder best for fish 9" and up and fishing anywhere that a 5/6 is preferable to 4/5 (breeze, faster water, stronger fish). For small water, and small fish there are rods that are more fun to use but it will still do the job. It can even cast a 4wt without too many complaints if necessary.

Here's my freshly arrived Epic 580 (sorry, not 805! im not into thick dwarfs :-) )
Short impressions after casting on parking lot.
It is not stiff, as someone said above (but definitely not like a noodle). It's on the faster side of glass, definitely.
But the rod is quite sensitive to loading/unloading (that's why we love glass), and you feel the moment , when blank is loading on the back cast.

Cannot test it on fish yet. We have trout season opening on 1st of February

and this would be just right match

I really like my 580 (previous generation) too.
Very versatile. It's also nice with a 4 weight line too.

I have never tried mine with different lines, but that's something I plan to do this upcoming season. I have no doubt it would perform well with a 6-weight line, and now I'm curious what it will feel like with a 4.

Jay, what reel are you using with your 580? That looks like a really nice build.

By the way, easternffer and Panfish74, I really love that amber color. Mine is one of the older ones in amber, but it isn't quite as deep or honey-colored as yours.

I think they went through different paint schemes on that color anyway--I've seen some on here that were almost lemon-yellow, and others that were much darker. The current version is definitely my favorite. Beautiful rods--make sure to tell us what you think once you get them out on the water more.

I forgot my 5 weight line that trip :)

It's a Danielsson Midge reel. I also got the Loop version before Danielsson went as their own brand. Spools are interchangeable. Best deal on the ultra light reel market.

I have tried different reels and have to use one that weighs about 5 ounces to get this rod to balance. Seems a bit forward heavy, at least the way I built mine - Without the kit.

I am trying to take a photo that shows all four pieces of my 580 being of equal length except for the bottom blank being just a few millimeters longer. This is because I have measured the Rod out at 8 foot, one and three-quarter inches or 97.75 inches. Thought I was losing my mind and brought out some other rods and made some more measurements. AND fitted it together multiple times and even after leaving it in the garage to get cold and perhaps lose some diameter in the ferrules.

Anyone else get that too?

If it bothers you, check with Epic. Rod dimensions, as ever in the tackle industry, are nominal. The blank itself may be trimmed to an exact measurement, but fittings--both ferrules and the reel seat, which need not be mounted to be completely flush to the blank end--will result in variations. Normal most likely, and probably fairly consistent for a given production run with the same components as your rod.

I measured mine at exactly 1/2" short of eight feet.

I’m going to be measuring my blanks from now on. This is just my fourth build and second set of new blanks. My other Epic measures almost exactly at 476.

I should mention that I expect that this kind of variation is normal, and it doesn't bother me in the least.

I haven't done it in a while, but I did pull out all of my rods at one point to measure them, and I want to say there were small differences in all of them, from the higher end rods down to the more budget friendly ones.
