Hello - Does anyone here have this specific model? If so, can you share your opinions on it? (What fly types and sizes, what line, what types of waters have you fished it on?).

I have a Steffen 7'3" 3/4wt 3pc that I really like (I fish it with a DT4 line)....fishes nicely on smaller waters with dry/dropper, or just dries and soft hackles, or with very small streamers as needed. It is pretty quick for glass, and roll casts very well.
- I would imagine that the 2/3 is similar to the 3/4 but more delicate....just wondering if it's as quick feeling as the 3/4. I'll end up asking Mark Steffen directly, but wanted to throw this out there in case someone on this forum has fished or cast both the 3/4 and 2/3 in the 7'3" length.

Can anyone compare the Steffen 7'3" 2/3wt 3pc to a Kenney 7'3" 3wt or Barclay 7'2" 3wt? (These are the the only 2 3wt's I have fished in this length).

I know Aurelio really likes his shorter 6' 2/3 Steffen, and think it might be Scud Dog? that has a 7'6" 2/3 Steffen in a 2pc. I'm just curious about the 7'3" 2/3 3pc.

Thanks in advance for any info.

I have the 7'3" 2/3. I haven't fished it much, but have very favorable impression. It's easy to cast either with #2 or #3 DT line. My #2 is a Rio Trout LT and the #3 is a Cortland Peach -- very different lines, so I'd say it's versatile as to line application. I was casting #16 and #18 dry flies as well as soft hackles. I don't know about casting weighted flies or lead. Action is progressive, and the rod has a fairly stout butt for a 2/3. I've fished it at close range with the lighter line and out to maybe 40 feet with the heavier line, with both ease and accuracy. If I have a quibble, it's this: roll casting isn't as natural and effortless as with some of my other rods. It'll still roll cast, though, and without the violent stroke that a companion was applying to roll cast his graphite 7-and-a-half footer at the time.

Before buying this one, I asked the board for recommendations. viewtopic.php?f=32&t=58102#p280643

The Steffen 7'3" 2/3 is definitely my favorite for beaver ponds and more open creeks. Because I like short rods, I'll still likely end up with a 6' to 6'6" rod at some point, to fish those brush-lined and tree-overhung little creeks I so enjoy. Look for a request for more recommendations in the not-too-distant future!

I have the 763 in a 3pc. Fishes nicely with a WF3. Because I now have a CTS 763/3 that I fish with a DT3, I'm now fishing my Steffen with a DT2.Great rod. It's super nice with the DT2. It's very light. I also have the Barclay 723. It's really nice too. I've yet to fish it enough to compare but they do feel similar. I have a pair of Kenneys and they run on the heavier side. That's not a bad thing.
I have the 793/4 Steffen. It's noticeably more sustantial than the 2/3 which is a great small fly rod. It's my rod of choice for summer dry flies like tricos, midges, paraleps, micro caddis, ants and small soft hackles. It's a sweet rod for the flies I fish with 7x and 8x tippets.

The Barclay is lighter in the hand, tracks better and is more versatile.

I owned the Steffen and bought the Barclay from Chris last summer after fishing with arroshooter’s on the Gallatin. For me the Barclay is the nicest, most versatile 3wt I have fished(and I have fished Aurelio’s beloved F2 :))

agree Chris' 7' #3 is a really nice blank.
I own Kenney's 7'3" #3, and it is the best in class, for me, I've found.
But if someone sneaks into my house and swaps my Kenney for a Barclay,
without my knowledge,
that probably wouldn't upset me too much, either.

Yes I still do have the 4 piece that Chris ship out to your place ahead of time so I could fish it on that trip. I love that fly rod, for many reasons including christening it with you on the Comanche.

Thanks for the replies, everyone.

If a person doesn't already have a Kenney 733 or Barclay 723 (hah!), I think it would be a fun rod to check out.
