Why did you take the Prime back if it was a good rod?

That's a good question but you know the answer Barry. He returned it because he could.

To exchange it for something I would use. I bought it with no cellophane and a soiled grip- didn't bother me at all.

I sell rods with 3 day return policy with one exception. Once you fish it's yours--period.

I have returned rods after test casting, but I don't even put a reel on to test cast. Don't want to return item with any sign of use. If I put a mark on it it's mine.

I picked up the 8wt this week.

So far, I'm happy with it. I agree that it's not a heavy-duty fighting stick, but it's lots of fun and bends in half.

I tried an SA boost 8wt line, and it was a bit too much and the tip flopped when casting. Running a rio perception 7wt right now and it feels perfect. I would be bummed if I didn't pick this up for carping and tossing foam hoppers for smallies. A streamer with a "fish skull" sculpin head is about as much as this can comfortably take. But it casts small weighted carp flies great, is a ton of fun, and really durable (I already whacked it on the fan and smashed some rocks).

first fish on it today was a healthy river carp that went to the backing.

So, perfect for some things, not great for everything, and worth it at 50% off.

It doesn't matter how much you used the rod. Cabelas just puts it in the bargain bin. Even if you never took it out of the packaging. They can't sell it for new after it's been sold once. So, you might as well just go fish it to see how much you like it.

"Unsatisfied for any reason" means you can return it regardless of what your own personal rules are. Cabelas makes plenty of money because of this guarantee, not in spite of it.

Can anyone comment on the CGR 7/8 compared to the Prime 8 in terms of stiffness, speed, and ability to throw weighted flies?

The CGR 7/8 is an actual 7/8 weight, although definitely closer to the 7wt rating than the 8wt. I just used it this weekend tossing clousers on an intermediate line in saltwater. It's a great little rod that I really like, especially for kayak fishing, as a shorter rod helps tremendously when sitting down and casting. I have caught some big fish on it and it fights them like any good 7/8 wt should.

I just put a half heavy WF7 on my CGR and that's perfect for my tastes. Has a crisper action than the Prime and will handle weighted flies and larger fish better. It's also a lot more portable and comes with a nice tube.

Gave the Prime 8wt a workout this weekend in Ypsi.

This was a fast-current river fish, and was about as much as the rod could comfortably steer.

Fun stick so far, I'm going to see how it does with a smaller deerhair frog pattern tonight....

That is the one redeeming quality I believe the Prime 8wt has, that it should make a fantastic carp rod. I almost kept it just for that, but I have an epic 686, the 7/8 CGR, and other rods that can perform that job and others better, so I opted to trade it in for the 4wt, which I am extremely pleased with. Great fish BTW!

You know, while it was fun, I like to be able to play river fish faster so I can get them back released as healthy as possible.

There were a few minutes where I just didn't have control of what that fish was going to do, and the rod was bent in half. I'm seriously considering (ok, I've convinced myself) picking up a CGR for river carping if it has more backbone.

I would recommend the 7/8 over the prime. When I tested out my 8wt prime, I fished it against my 5wt prime for white bass and it barely through my white bass flies farther, and I am talking a couple of feet at best, than my 5wt. To me those little flies should have been absolutely no problem for an 8wt. I am not sure how Cabelas came to that line rating for that rod, but they severely missed the mark. Interesting since I think they killed it with the 3-5wt offerings.

Whelp, I picked up the CGR 7/8 last night, went out for a few mile SUP with the wife, and got a handful of casts in. Largemouth and pike were both eager to play topwater with a large deerhair frog.

had no problem tossing a bulky frog 40ft, which is plenty fishing from the SUP.

For me, it's the better rod. I really, really wanted to like the prime 8 more. But, I was looking for something to do battle with heavy fish with, and it's not that.

Agreed. I was extremely sad when my prime "8wt" just didnt perform anywhere close to what an 8wt should.

Yeah. I'm still searching for "that" rod on a bit of a budget. I fish from the SUP or kayak alot, I need a stick that can handle 18-19" smallmouth and a 250g-ish line.

I have a TiCA 8wt that is pretty close, but its bulky and takes it out of you to punch into the wind for hours.

300p, look for a vintage 8' 7wt 2pc Berkley Specialist on eBay. They are cheap (<$60), the right length for a kayak, will cast a very long line, will cast big bugs and heavily leaded flies, and will fight big bass, pike, and carp. It's not a 7 wt as listed. Try it with a 8 or 9 wt. It may take a while for one to show up so be patient or ask for one on the board's Wanted page. You will be very pleased.

thanks for the tip!! Never heard of that rod, but I'll certainly keep my eyes peeled now.

I really like shorter rods on the board and in the yak. I'm fishing some Wright and McGill Gen II S-curves in 7'11 right now.....but they're broomsticks.

So far, I don't know whether its bad selection, or line pairing, but I don't have a rod that really sings with an intermediate line, which I fish most of the time on the lakes.

This was a couple weeks ago on a graphite stick....hope to do it again on a proper glass stick this week :)

300hp, nice looking smallie. Where are you at in that pic?

Look here for more on the Berkley Specialist...

Another good candidate for what you want would be one of the Shakespeare 8 footers rated as a C, HCH, 7 or 8 and has a Kwik -Taper action.

CB thanks for the leads my dude.

That pic was on walled lake in oakland co, by my wife's parents. We live in Ypsi, and I mostly fish the Huron. Lemme know if you're out this way and I'll show ya around.

Sure would like to cast that Prime I had... gosh dangit.
I regret selling that one. Needed more time with it.
Now this thread teases me with a lesson learned.

Anybody busted theirs out lately ?
