I'm guessing you have the 7'3" to need a 6wt on it.

Yes sir its the Prime 5wt. i have a 5wt clearwater line that works well on it too, but the 6wt really makes it shine. It nearly casts to my backing with virtually no effort.

Interesting that you favored a heavier line - I primarily used mine with a Rio Trout LT WF4 or a Cortland Precision WF4 Intermediate. I did play around with a 200 grain shooting head on it and that was fun though. 200 grains is between a 7 and 8 weight, but packed into a 17 foot head vs 30. Turned over bass bugs pretty darn well :lol

Interestingly enough it likes the 6wt line better, but i put a 5wt streamer line on it and it didn't like it at all. It might be my cast and the fact that it was almost dark while i was trying to test it, so I will try again soon.

I'd chalk it up to individual casting style and preference. Glass rods seem to have a wider grain weight window that they can feel good to people in than graphite. Most graphite sticks can be overlined by a weight, but with the push toward high stiffness, distance casting tools I don't see many rods on the shelves that can be underlined well except for when casting for long distances (ie putting a 4 weight line on a #5 rod, then carrying 40 or 50 feet of line in the air vs 20 or 30) - I think it has to do with the fact that in the graphite world, every rod designer seems to be a champion distance caster and the marketing drives that point. In the glass world - no one is going for record casting distances over a casting pond - they're going fishing and the glass rod designers are designing fishing tools, not casting tools.

I used to have a 5 weight graphite that was lifeless with a 5 weight line, but put a 6 on it and it came alive and was a nice fishing tool.

Kracer, I'm glad to read I wasn't the only one that couldn't wait for better light to cast my 7'1" 4wt Prime. I went out after dark and had no idea how much line I was putting out with the rod. I knew it wasn't casting real well but decided to wait until it got light before judging the rods performance. Since that time I have lawn cast it a number of times and now need to get it on a stream. It is as soft a rod as I own but I think it's going to be a lot of fun. Because it was so soft I tried a double taper 3wt on it and it didn't work for me. A Cortland "Peach" 4wt seems to be about right for this little rod.

Regards, Jerry

Hit the water with the 6' 3wt version of this rod on New Year's Day. This rod can really shoot some line. Have mine lined up with a wf3f super dri xceed.

I have the 3wt 6' and the 4wt 7'1".

I have taken the 3wt to Smoky Mountains for some brookies and the 4wt was mostly panfish/crappie this past year. I think I prefer the 4wt, but I think that is mostly due to having cheap Cabela's line I got on clearance. May upgrade the line on both rods this year and try them again.

I fished my 4wt 7'1" for the first time this past Thursday. Temps were just above freezing and I wanted to give the rod a try besides lawn casting. The 4wt Cortland peach line I was using was throwing a larger loop which I have to believe was in part from the cold weather. I'm thinking this rod is going to fit very nicely into my small creek trout fishing. Oh yes, five browns to 10" all on a #18 Winter Brown soft hackle.

Regards, Jerry

Are the 8' rods in stock yet? Can't find them on website. Be nice to grab one before sale is over.

As great as that would be, I would assume they will add them once the sale is over, being a new product and all.

Happy to help! Confirmed that right now mobile versions of the site are not updated, but I have searched it and purchased mine online on a PC already.

Kracer,

Thanks.

Now I have to find a house with taller ceilings so the tube will fit.

I walked into the Austin store a couple days ago and they had used Primes on sale for $99.00.

After I showed them the web sale they said they would give it to me for sale price plus take additional 15% off. Not great deal except looked new and came with a $90 reel and new line and backing. So now I have a spare 7'1" (or maybe the other ones the spare).

Sure wish I lived close to one of these stores.
