There doesn't seem to be much info out on the new Epic DH11 11'6" switch rods. I know a few big name builders have built them for clients, but I cant seem to find any actual knowledge and personal experience with them. What line do you like throwing? Do you find it to be too much rod for your average western trout? Is weight an issue? Can you compare it to any other two hand rods, especially the echo glass switch rods? I know this is a long shot, but I'd really like to learn more about them.

This is no trout rod (with the exception of monsters). It's a very powerful big fish rod. It has a lot of flex in the butt so it's going to be particularly nice for picking up heavy sinking lines and should do well with Skagit heads. It's the kind of rod you would use for salmon in heavy flows and small to medium rivers where a 10' 8/9wt graphite singlehander might seem a bit frail. The Fenwick 9310 is a fairy wand in comparison (with the long extension handle it makes a nice switch rod) and I would not think of using the 9310 on trout.

It's very debatable whether the Epic is a switch rod in the sense that it's not viable as a singlehander at all - I'd rather call it a short double handed rod.

I think most of the heavier switch rods fall into the baby spey category rather than used as a single handed rod. The exception is nymphing for steelhead where you end up doing a lot of roll casting anyway.

The 4-6 Wt switch rods are more trout like with a 6 doing some double duty as a steelhead or a bigger trout rod.

I should have added that I would intend to use the rod only as a smaller spey rod. I have no intention at all to use it as a single hander.

I have one that is being built right now. Should have it in about two weeks. I am getting also as a short spey rod. With the grain window up to 530. That's an 8wt spey, so to me not a light line rod. I will be using it for Skagit casting. Will let you guys know more when I get it.

I look forward to hearing all about it John. I see its rated for 320-540 grains. I use a 320gr Scandi and 375gr Skagit on a TCX 5119. I'm really interested to find out the sweet spot on this glass two hander.

I have a fiberglass 11' 6/7wt switch Steve Godshall made a couple years ago. Now I do Skagit casting mostly. I have a 450 to 475gr. on it and love the rod. So I also am wondering how this rod compares. And now you have the Echo rods. Fiberglass world is getting bigger quickly.

Got the rod for a short time ago, tested it with some scandi heads, weight around 500grains seems to work perfect for the rod and me.
Here is some pics of the rod Christian made for me.

Just love the rod, and weight is defenatly no issue, cant wait to bend the rod with
Some norwegian salmon.

Jukkeri, welcome to the forum. You have one of Christian's most beautiful rods and we all know what a craftsman he is. Good for you. What reel are you going to use with it?

Just bumping this back up for reference.

I was using a 33' 430 grain Scandi this morning (with no poly leader, but a long mono leader) and this was on the bare minimum to get this rod to do anything for me. The only other scandi line I had available was a 560gn which I didn't bother putting on (I probably should have).

It’s starts to work with a 450-480 Airflo Rage for me, and goes up to 550 or so. It’s too heavy to feel right with a true scandi in my opinion. I like the rod but it’s much better with something like a Rage (a little shorter with a less fine front taper)

I can’t imagine anyone fishing it at 320 or whatever the low end written on the blank is.

The other thread with stripstrike’s switch rod question reminded me that I was going to add to this thread for reference...

During my inquiries with CTS I asked them about their two hand grain windows - they have now changed how they rate their 2H rods (now following Bob Meiser’s system) and they told me that they would now rate the grain window of the original Epic DH11 as about 450-600gr. This certainly lines up with my experience with the rod.
