It's a nice looking rod, the tube reminds me of a sea lamprey

Glass Enthusiast, agreed! I really like the design - no tube cap to lose, just a simple snap closure. rsagebrush, curious what material the tube cover is made of?
Thanks!

Has anyone ever tried a Tsuruya glass rod?

On a side note, does anyone have the inside scoop on which Japanese maker rolls the blanks for Chris Barclay? (I apologize in advance if asking this question was in bad form.)

In talking with Chris, if he told anyone he would have to kills them. He wisely keeps that info close to his vest.

Good luck on that. I've had him in my truck and have threatened to leave him on the side of I44 in the middle of BFE if he wouldn't talk to no avail.

Well, Blue Dun returned my inquiry and the rod is Graphite with a Solid Graphite Tip. Something got lost in translation originally.

In any event the rod is a true medium fast stick and handles a 3 or 4 wt line real nice. Finish work is superb, one of the best I have ever seen. The rod is very packable and a very smooth performer.

Scud Dog- dating a cousin would be rather normal as of late.

rsagebrush,
I couldn't help but notice one of your locations being in West Virginia.
BTW, I noticed that Blue Dun and the other Japanese sites have whittled down the number of their offerings in glass, reels and everything else. In general, fly shops don't seem to offer as many product lines as they use to.

At JY108 to the dollar, it's a good time to buy in Japan - the dollar is holding strong against the yen.

Sorry to change gears on the thread but was wondering if anyone could tell me about the STL reel seats. Very interested in the reel seat material and if they are made in house.

Thanks to all.

(Chris, whoever rolls your blanks is doing a fine job from the three different rods I cast this summer. Well done).

Grouse, when I bought the rest of the STL blanks he also sent along the rest of his seat insert material. I asked him the species of the insert wood and via translation he said it was a flavor of lacewood. I've also seen him use a pale butternut. I'm not sure who made his seat hardware. Does this answer your question?

And thanks for the compliments on my rods!

Speaking of Japanese glass rods, I just happened to see quite a few Axisco Airrite 6 and 10-piece glass rods listed on eBay. I searched for "fly rod japan".

I never saw them listed there before, but maybe they've been listing them for awhile. I'm not in the market right now, but thought I'd mention it for others.

I searched that - a Japan fountain pen seller moving into new markets - very smart, and he's done his homework.

Just heard on the news that the Japanese government made some bold moves yesterday to strengthen the Yen. I'd suggest you move quick if you are considering gear from Japan. I also think Rakuten is a site worth mentioning. You can purchase there without the aid of an interpreter.

careful - only buy from Rakuten if it's gear wearhoused in NY/NJ. If it's in Japan, you'll have to make separate shipping arrangements.

at 112 yen to the dollar, it is a good time. I just haven't figured out how much my credit card company or paypal charges for the conversion.

Yes, Pen Pen has done his homework and is also looking for fools to pay about 40%+ from what Blue Dun fly shop is selling that 10pce rod for.

How good is the action on those 10pc Axisco rods? Seems like with all those spigot ferrules, the action would be lost but I can't find much info on the 10pc model.

If you don't have a specific need for a 10-pc. rod, buy a 6-pc - they're great rods.

I had a 10pc and it is an amazingly well designed piece of equipment. The grip is very small but the rod handles a 3 wt or a 4 just great. I think the top three ferules are reversed and the tip appeared to be solid fiberglass. The rod IMO is medium fast and smooth, I did not notice all the ferules. I sold mine to '6footrod' perhaps he could chime in on his opinion of it.

Considering what some folks say about the 6pc rods it appears that Axisco designs some very nice rods.

If i were buying one it would be from Blue Dun in Japan.

^ this. The 10 piece airrites are VERY nice. The 6 piece airrites are, IMHO, even nicer. I find the stream 7' 3wt 6pc to be very accurately rated as a 3wt, and it's MAYBE just a tad faster than James Green's Native Trout Series 3wts (in 7'2", 7'0" and 6'9", all in 3pc configuration). Having traveled just recently with two small children and all the accoutrements they require, those small packable rods that fit into a small nook in the luggage are a real blessing.

The workmanship is top notch. Get them from Blue Dun for sure - their shipping is quite rapid and penpen is definitely marking these up.

These threads are dangerous! Ha ha ha
I ordered the 7' 3 wt. 6-piece Axisco Airrite rod last Saturday night from Blue Dunn.
It was delivered to my P.O. Box at 8:48am this morning.
Super fast! I was able to go pick it up during my lunch break.
It appears to be very nice from what I could tell from my very brief inspection.
Mine does not have a maple reel seat. I'm not sure why I was expecting a light colored maple real seat?
Anyway, it has a reddish colored wooden real seat. I'm not sure what type of wood it is, but it is not maple and it is not rosewood.
I dig this rod.
It should make for an excellent back packing/travel fly rod.

I know Yamashiro san well. While living in Tokyo I fished with him a few times. His glass rods are very nice and are excellent craftsmanship made in the shop. I had him build both a bamboo rod and a feel I rod. I used his feel II rod on one fishing trip. Both are excellent. As of August he only had a few feel I rods left. Only new feel II rods are available in the full range of sizes. Japan is full of tiny mountain streams with brook trout and yamame. They know their bamboo and fiberglass.
