Scientific Angler System fly rods have a letter followed by four numbers printed on the individual rod blanks near the ferrule. Does anyone have an idea of what these mean?

My SA System rods:
System 4 A7247
System 5 C2760
System 6 A6945

I'd love to know, too. I have three of the System rods - I'll post the s/n's of mine when I return from this road trip.

The S/N on my system rods:

System 8 - B7224
System 9 - B1849
System 10 - A8317

I'd love to know how these numbers relate to year of manufacture or number of rod made in a particular year or run.

System 4. A7357 plastic tube
System 5 B7142 Aluminum tube
System 6. B7783 Aluminum tube
System 6 5 pc. B8938 Aluminium tube
System 7. A9646 unknown
System 7. A8281 plastic tube
System 8. C3841 unknown
System 9. A2952 unknown
System 10. A1790 plastic tube

Wondered if rod came in an aluminum or plastic tube was somehow related to serial number.

Resurrecting an old thread. Did folks ever figure out s/n pattern?

Letter A appears to be plastic tube. Any correlation between S/n and rod appointments or fiberglass composition?

I have a system 5 C model with blue metal tube. The reel seat is a lighter copper color with removable reel seat cap.

The fact that this thread has languished all these years implies no new information has come forth. The numbers must have meant something to someone at some time, but as that generation has faded, the rationale and meaning has been lost.

Besides, as they teach you in museum cataloging 101, any registration system is eventually doomed to failure. Unless someone discovers a long-lost ledger, or catalog to serve as a Rosetta Stone, we may never know. The likelihood of such a discovery declines as the years go by.

Was hoping I missed another thread somewhere else when bringing this one back from the grave or better yet catch the eye of a retired scientific angler employee who may have the decoder ring...

All the s/n's I've photographed are A's, and the only tube I had was plastic.
It seems logical that later rods would be upgrading appearance with aluminum tubes - they were probably having a tough time against then-new graphite in fly shops.
I learned more about fishing (rigging) from the free magazine-size SA tutorial than from any other printed source.

If the SA marking system for their rods was anything like that used on their reels, good luck making sense out of it.

Is there a general date range? My understanding is that the glass System rods are early 1970s, but I don’t have a citation to back that up.
