Both Livingstons--my 8'6" 3-weight tied with my 8'0" 5-weight. Slight edge to the 863? Maybe, but I'm not sure.

Not 100% sure, Ron.
FWIW, my understanding (based on communications with Mr Lyons several years ago) is that Lami rolled the blanks with tapers based on Dwight Lyon’s specifications.

I’ve never held a Lami.

I had an 3-pc 8' 4-wt, definitely Lami, and a good rod.

Yessir - mine look exactly like that. They are light in the hand, beautifully built, & have a red agate stripper.

The newer Hardy glass is super nice, my friend has one, but it can't compare with my RJ Shott yellow glass 7'6".

The ********* 864 and 764 are damn sweet as well. The 764 is just a small stream dream come true.

Kinda difficult to say as fiberglass as material generally makes amazing smooth rods.
We are fortunate to have so many superb rods to our disposal. I might say we are living in the golden era for fine fiberglass rods

Bingo, ibooke. Then or now, 'glass rods usually provide the feel loosely described as "smooth." As with the 7 and 6 weight line, often a revelation to a fly angler schooled on the lighter line weights, sometimes I think the glowing descriptions of any one 'glass rod as "smooth" are partly just the outcome of being relatively new to the material. It would be easier to name the very few that aren't "smooth." Eventually, we go to smooth, smoother, smoothest.

That's a great way to describe glass actions.

My smoothest glass rod is probably the Kabuto 8033...it has a parabolic taper that begins to load at the grip...almost everything else have progressive tapers (or synthisis tapers from Barclay) which fall into the smooth catagory...and then there's two from ********* Rod Co (863 & 895) which hold down the smoother slot.

My regret regarding glass rods, past, is selling my Powell 9' 12 wt...while it was not in any of the smooth catagories for casting, it was great at fighting big 60-100+ lb fish...with my Peaker Reel, that rod may have been able to land a '58 Buick.

Grouse, the second rod you posted looks like a Winston. What length and weight is it?

Holdover, Good eye. SF Winston 7 1/2' 2/1 five weight. Have cast a few Winston's of this configuration and this is one of the better ones. Fun with a five or a six weight fly line. Hookjaw has one I cast years ago which is also quite fine in this length but cannot recall if his was a MT rod of a SF model.

Thanks Grouse. My sole Winston (8'3" 5wt) is just a smooth casting great fishing tool. I need another rod like a hole in the head but if the right Winston came along I'd be tempted.

Grouse, what is the modern rod? Hard to read the writing in the photo.

Thanks,

Yamame Fly Rods Black Pearl model in four weight. A joy to cast and a special taper. Additional photographs shown below from the maker Nico Vreugdenhil who creates a fine fly rod and was a true gentleman to work with on the build. A standout long length glass rod that feels very light in hand.

(Honorable mention to the Paddock 705 as an especially smooth modern short length fly rod)

Grouse how would you describe the black pearl action/attributes?
Nico built me a pure 6'8'' parabolic over the winter and it's a sweet casting rod as well, not had chance to fish it yet.

I really enjoyed casting Nico's "The Pure" fly rod as well. The Pure model and the The Black Pearl model are certainly different tapers. The makers web page likely has better description of each rod. However, the Pure seemed slightly parabolic and as one other caster noted when we were casting the rod he felt it was most like the Paul Young Driggs taper. Really like The Pure for lawn casting and someday would enjoy trying it for fly fishing.

The Black Pearl is long and light for a fiberglass fly rod with a fluid casting feel. I prefer to this rod to the McFarland 884 which is a similar long length fiberglass fly rod. Both are very fine rods but the Black Pearl gets the nod for casting pleasure or as this post noted for being more smooth. In a situation with heavier wind I am not sure yet how the Black Pearl will fare, yet other rods can fill this gap if heavy wind is an issue. The 884 in fishing does handle the wind fairly well for its line weight so I will need to test the Black Pearl further in these conditions.

The Black Pearl feels nothing like older nine foot (closest length to this rod) heavy weight fiberglass rods. It also feels more complex and not as noodle like as say the Winston 8' four weight on a Fisher blank. Most Winston Fisher rods are excellent, just not a fan of the 8' four weight.

Have not cast The Black Pearl taper against anything Dusty has created in longer lighter line fiberglass rods but that would be a fun comparison. Not many taper makers have the ability to create a long, light fiberglass fly rod that casts well. For now excited to take this rod back on the water soon.

Thanks for the details, i had noticed the low weight for a nearly 9 foot rod. Sounds like similar on paper to Dusty's but i've not cast his longer rods just the 7'6 glass.
Be really interested in how the black pearl deals with some wind!
The pure feels like it will be a nice all round rod when casting, it feels really different to all of my other rods even just waggling it which i guess is down to the parabolic feel.
