Not a lot of attention is given to these rods, especially when it comes to how they fish. I was gifted one recently by a fly shop owner I've gotten to know in recent years. Pretty neat rod; 8'6" 5-6-7wt that was formerly owned by a local character and guide Joe Kimsey. Joe's no longer around so I feel fortunate to fish with it on the same Waters he used to fish.

It's a well made ( love his up Locker) refined progressive taper that fishes as well as it cast.

On it's maiden voyage I used a 5wt Sylk and it performed flawlessly. The water was cold so for the most of the day I nymph fished. It came with mojo.

For the last 45 minutes I switched to a dry and I honestly can't determine which it does better. Clearly Powell knew what he was doing.

Powell's machined reel seat is pretty much a TM logo.
Never had my hands on a glass Powell, but IM6 Silver Creek 4/5 was my go-to trout rod for two decades, then became the same for my daughters.

By all accounts Walton made desirable rods out of all materials including his unique hexagraph.

I liked this rod so much I sought out another :rolleyes and picked up an 8' labeled for for 5,6,7,8 lines. It's also on a conolon blank with the hollowed metal spigot ferrules but is a later rod with a softer and semi-parabolic nature. Only taking it fishing will tell me if I like it as much as the first.

Walton’s uplocking reel seat is a love or hate thing.

In my case, it was hate. Walton talked me into it instead of the footed butt cap and ring that I like.

It frustrated me enough times that I finally had Chris Barclay replace it for me.

Can't beat rods with mojo and experience. Looks like a keeper for sure!

Always check your Walton Powell tube labels for the spelling error! Not a big deal but fun none the less.

There are a decent number of tube labels out there where the Distinction in the words “Fishing Tackle of Distinction” is missing the letter n. So they read “Fishing Tackle of Distiction”. Walk had it brought to his attention and replied that he didn’t care as he was a rod maker, not damn secretary. So he used them.
